Lindsay Clancy Fundraiser Tops $1.22M As GoFundMe Reviews Campaigns

A fundraiser for the parents of Lindsay Clancy passed $1.22 million after her murder trial ended in a mistrial. However, GoFundMe prohibits campaigns that fund the legal defense of violent crimes, including murder and crimes against minors.

The Charges Against Clancy

Naturally, true crime watchers on social media started talking about the fundraiser because Lindsay Clancy remains charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the January 2023 deaths of her children, Cora, Dawson, and Callan.

The organizer has emphasized that the fundraiser is for Clancy’s parents, Mike and Paula Musgrove. She has also said the money cannot be used for their daughter’s defense costs.

The Family Fundraiser

Titled “The Musgrove Family Fund,” the campaign was created by Brandee Mulligan, a Wisconsin woman who is not related to the Musgrove family. Michael Musgrove is named as its beneficiary. At the time of writing, approximately 35,600 donations had been made.

The fundraiser started on August 11. Its target stood at $2 million before the mistrial, but that was later increased to $3 million.

In an update, Mulligan said:

I’ve decided to raise the goal of this fundraiser since this process has been extended, so is the time Paula and Mike will remain away from their home, continuing to carry the costs that come with being there for their daughter every day.

Rules About Funding

Kevin Reddington, the defense attorney foir Lindsay Clancy, is aware of the fundraiser, but he did not create it, does not manage it, and has not formally endorsed it.

CT Insider cited Mulligan as saying that “GoFundMe rules limit use of the money to supporting the Musgroves and cannot be used to pay their daughter’s legal fees.”

GoFundMe does not prohibit every campaign connected to a person accused of a crime.

However, clause 8.10 of its Terms of Service bans fundraising for the legal defense of violent crimes, including murder and crimes against minors.

Questions Are Being Raised

Because the Musgroves previously funded their daughter’s defense, the enormous campaign has inevitably raised questions about where the money may ultimately go.

On X, @Rickisback_ON_X posted:

How is Lindsey Clancy allowed to have a Gofundme page approaching $3 million bucks? I thought they had a policy against those charged with violent crimes getting services from them.

It is apparent that GoFundMe is aware of the questions. The Stamford Advocate reported that GoFundMe said in an email to CT Insider that it was “reviewing” fundraisers related to Clancy.

The company added, “Any found to be in violation of our terms of service will be removed.”

For now, the fundraiser created by Brandee Mulligan remains operational.

Another Fundraiser For Reddington

A second fundraiser is also attracting interest because it specifically seeks money to support Reddington’s work.

In May 2023, The Boston Globe reported that Clancy’s defense had been funded by her parents. The publication cited Reddington as saying, “They’re pretty much depleting everything they have to try and help her out.”

He also said, “Every nickel that’s been spent on her defense has come from her parents.”

The organizer of the second campaign, Melissa Ross, wrote, “This fundraiser is meant to support Kevin directly for the time, legal fees, and effort he is giving so generously.”

Closer To Violating The Terms?

The Reddington fundraiser appears more questionable because its stated purpose comes much closer to what clause 8.10 prohibits. However, it also remains active.
