The Walking Dead’s Showrunner Greg Nicotero Discusses How Far They Went to Keep the Element of Surprise for Controversial Cliffhanger!

Anyone who has watched The Walking Dead, knows that the cliffhanger on Season 6 was by far the toughest thing to watch and speculate on. All we know is that in the final moments, one of our beloved characters dies at the hand of Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) barb-wired bat named “Lucille”. Fans were left with feelings of hatred, anger, sadness and confusion.

The Walking Dead’s Greg Nicotero admits that he was a little shocked that fans would be so angry about it; this isn’t the first time a TV show has left us literally hanging about someone living or dying. Even after learning of their reactions, Nicotero insists that they wouldn’t have done anything differently and he is really quite proud of the finale.

For most of us, Sunday October 23’s premiere of The Walking Dead cannot come quick enough, but at the same time, we need to step back and look at the situation. Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) will no longer be in control. No matter who Negan kills, the dynamic of the show has changed forever. We no longer have one group of survivors against another. There will be the Sanctuary, Ezekiel and his Kingdom, Alexandria and the Hilltop.

Nicotero admits that even when he had read the exact moment in the comic book, he was left thinking about how brutal it was, even after all the core group had already been through. Most of the characters, in the Season 6 finale are completely broken down with their hands tied, helpless and crying; nothing like that has happened before and he feels like they really captured that moment in the final episode.

TWD’s Greg Nicotero explains how difficult it was for them to keep the cliffhanger such a secret. The scene was shot out in the back lot, which is out of the public’s eye. No paparazzi, or crazed fan could view the scene even if they tried. No fences to climb, no trees to hide in. In fact, they even kept the secret from the actors. Not one person in the cast knew who died, until they resumed filming Season 7, not even the killer himself, Negan!

To quote Greg Nicotero, in his interview with Entertainment Weekly, “the majority of viewers would feel the same way I do. They don’t want to know ahead, they don’t want to know what’s going to happen. You don’t want to know how it ends. It’s about the journey!”
