In the clip released from her exclusive interview with Oprah, she retells the worst incident of the violence her mother suffers at the hands of her father. Her mother replaced all the locks on the door to lock him out of the family home in hopes that she will get the courage to leave him permanently. Her father came home and was angry he was locked out of his family home.  He kicked the door open, destroying the newly installed lock. Her father had grabbed the pipe that was part of the lock (back then the locks had a pipe that went into the lock to secure the door) and tried to choke her mother with it. Debbi’s mother couldn’t speak or talk because of the pressure to her throat. Morgan said, “As a little girl, that was a terrifying experience.”

The experience prompted her to write a memoir titled, “The Monkey on My Back.” Debbi Morgan wrote it to try to understand her own life. She explained that the abuse could last generations. She married three abusive men before she decided to break the vicious cycle of abuse. Morgan tearfully told Oprah that three out of four brothers turned out to be abusive husbands.
