The investigation into Shannon Miranda and Miranda’s Rescue entered a new phase. On Friday, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office investigators finished executing a second search warrant at the Fortuna property. What they found underneath the soil changes the scope of the case.

The math on this case was always strange, but now the physical evidence is catching up to the missing paperwork.

What the Bulldozers Uncovered

According to CBS San Francisco, search teams found “117 intact dog remains” along with “21 canine skulls” on the ranch.

They also pulled hundreds of miscellaneous animal bones from several mass graves. It’s a massive graveyard hidden right in plain sight.

The details regarding how these animals died are specific. CBS San Francisco reports that forensic tests show “many of the dogs died from gunshot wounds.”

Inside a barn on the property, deputies found 600 dog collars. Investigators believe the barn area may have been used as a location where dogs were killed.

Investigators are examining whether the collars were removed before many of the dogs died.

Where Are the Rest?

The sheer scale of the disappearance remains the biggest question for the multi-agency task force, which includes the FBI, the USDA, and the California Department of Justice.

The state of California is looking closely at the numbers. As reported by ABC7 News, an affidavit shows that out of more than 900 animals transferred to the Fortuna rescue since January 2025, a staggering “730 animals remain unaccounted for.”

Only about 100 adoptions can actually be verified through paperwork. The remaining animals have not yet been accounted for.

It makes you wonder how a facility can lose track of 730 living creatures in less than 18 months. Apparently, it takes a lot of loose dirt.

No Charges Yet for Shannon Miranda

Despite the growing number of animal remains discovered, the wheels of justice turn slowly.

As of Monday, June 29, 2026, Shannon Miranda hasn’t been formally charged with any crimes. He’s free while the District Attorney reviews the paperwork.

In fact, ABC7 News notes that Miranda “is currently allowed to operate the business” under the watchful eye of local animal control monitoring. He currently has about 50 animals left on site.

It appears to be a bizarre compromise given what investigators have just pulled out of the ground.

What Comes Next for Miranda’s Rescue

Authorities scheduled a major press conference for Monday, June 29 to lay out the newest forensic updates.

The findings could turn this fraud investigation into a massive felony animal cruelty prosecution. Whether Miranda’s Rescue will survive this remains to be seen.
