Recently, a bunch of kids in Florida went out to play on a summer afternoon, and they came across a human skull. Well, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd shared a lot about it, and he praised the kids. Read on for more details.
Discovering The Remains
The kids came across the human remains in Lakeland on Thursday. Some of them were very young, so hopefully they get through it okay.
Aged from six to 12, they explored the woods near a cow pasture near Hatchery road. Per FOX 13, the kids came across “a skull, mandible and three vertebrates.”
What Happened Next
What happened next showed remarkable maturity for the youngsters because they got their families interested enough to call it in.
But, the Florida sheriff praised them a lot because apparently, one of the kids stayed behind to safeguard the bones from animal dispersal.

By Friday, deputies found the rest of the skeleton behind a nearby house, WFLA confirmed
Who Was She?
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the bones belong to a “woman in her 70s.” Apparently, she lived alone and hoarded a lot of things
For now, it’s presumed that she died of natural causes. While there is a lot of degradation of the remains, they could be about two months old.
He also mentioned that she was last seen on April 1, during a wellness check that the woman objected to.
No Foul Play At This Time
Right now, it seems that the investigation team doesn’t suspect that a true crime took place.
During a press conference, fielding questions from the media, the news emerged that the family of the person was told about the find.
Additionally, Grady noted that they probably don’t belong to any local missing persons cases, including “Tonya Whipp, Ethan Fussell, or Savannah Mahoney”
Plus, he took the opportunity to ask Florida residents to check in their relatives who might not see them all that often.
Why Mention The Hoarding?
Updates arrived quickly and it’s thought that the remains of elderly lady belong to a hoarder. The investigation’s not over yet, but the hoarding aspect brings some health concerns,
For now, from a follow up press conference, it seems that the the home presents a problem. As the history of the woman emerges, it appears that she suffered from medical problems and was extremely reclusive.
The home, according to Sheriff Judd is “unlivable.” There are piles of garbage and junk everywhere. Why does that matter? Well, the air could be toxic because animal waste made ammonia levels dangerously high.
So, the cleanup could take time as workers have to wear special masks and can’t stay indoors for long. On top of that, rotting trash, and dirty water attracted clouds of flies, mosquitoes, and maggots.
Viewers React
In the first interview, many people seemed interested in whether there was a true crime. But in the second press release, folks focused on the sad details of the unnamed woman.
One of them said, “This is so sad that this poor woman was by herself and no family.”
Others, however, felt angry about the details regarding hoarding. But in fairness to the sheriff, it seems the situation inside the house is a necessary part of the investigation.
Here are a few more responses in the discussion:
- Lots of elders become a hoarder because they are unable to tote things to the curb. Also, some do not want to be bothered.
- Poor lady. I hope she didn’t lay there alone in pain before she died.
- Sad and crazy.
