A recent investigative report by WSYX ABC 6 sheds new light on a disturbing child abuse case in Ohio involving Elizabeth Siders. The outlet traced the story back to a courtroom in 2008.

No Checks Done On The Marriage

That year, a West Virginia circuit court judge approved a marriage license for Elizabeth. She was only 15 years old.

At the time, West Virginia had no minimum age for marriage. The law only required parental consent and a judge’s signature.

Gary Siders Jr., her groom, was 18. His parents, Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders, also signed the paperwork.

According to West Virginia family law attorney Amanda Alexander, “the judge absolutely could have stopped this marriage,” but the law did not require the court to conduct an investigation first.

The Children Of Children

West Virginia later raised its legal marriage age to 16, but loopholes remain. The timing of that 2008 wedding raised immediate red flags for investigators.

Elizabeth gave birth to her oldest child just two months after getting married. She had her next baby at age 16. Because of the timeline, authorities are now trying to determine whether Elizabeth was also a victim of grooming and abuse during her teenage years.

The Current Charges

The adult life of Elizabeth Siders looks vastly different today. Now 33, she and three other family members face 16 counts of child endangerment.

At the end of June, police entered a home in Hamden, Ohio, to serve an unrelated warrant. Instead, they discovered 16 children hidden away in what Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson called “pure evil.”

The children, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years old, allegedly spent the last four years trapped inside a single 12-by-12-foot room.

That is smaller than many average bedrooms. The case has raised difficult questions about how such a large family could remain hidden from public view for so long.

Horrifying Conditions

The conditions inside the home were horrifying. Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain described the squalor by saying, “Most of our livestock was kept in better conditions than the children. Just a disgusting scene.”

The floorboards were so badly rotted by human waste that officers feared they would collapse. Medics rushed nine children to hospitals, and one had to be placed on a breathing tube.

The Attorney General said that if police had arrived 24 hours later, multiple children likely would have died.

Off The Grid For Decades

Reports indicate the family managed to stay off the grid for nearly two decades.

They constantly moved across different Ohio counties, never enrolling the children in school or creating medical records. The isolation took a heavy toll.

Some of the children cannot speak at all, and an 18-year-old could not even spell their own name.

Other outlets, including LA Mag, reported that newly released records continue to expose a shocking family history.

Held On Bond

Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders are all being held on $300,000 bonds.

Investigators are still sorting through sealed records to piece together whether a childhood marriage in West Virginia may have helped lay the groundwork for what investigators now describe as a house of horrors in Ohio.
