Lindsay Clancy: 300 Supporters Rally As Postpartum Debate Grows

Lindsay Clancy is currently on trial for the murder of her three children at Plymouth Superior Court in Massachusetts, and ahead of the weekend, about 300 supporters gathered dressed in pink.

The Demonstration

Most of the demonstrators were women and they were displaying various signs about how they felt Lindsay Clancy “needed help” and not a prison sentence.

According to the Associated Press, “Several of the 300 women, and a few men, said Clancy’s story resonated with them and that they wanted to raise awareness about how the mental health system treats women.”

People Are Speaking Out

The outlet cited April Vincent, a 52-year-old paralegal from Rhode Island, as saying, “Women are being dismissed, neglected and ignored when we speak up.” She added, “We’re scared because nobody takes us seriously.”

Jeanne Zaborski, a 72-year-old retired nurse, also talked to AP reporters outside. “I hope Lindsay gets the care she needs and deserves and other women will come together like we did today,” she shared.

Some attendees formed a circle and recited the Lord’s Prayer. Others held up flags from various nations to show support isn’t confined to the USA.

Mental Illness vs Intentional Crime

The prosecution case alleges that the former labor nurse planned the January 2023 killings of her three young children. Prosecutors pointed to the fact that she sent her husband out for food which gave her the time to carry out the killings.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington argued that Clancy was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder, meaning she isn’t criminally responsible for the tragedy. But prosecution psychiatrist Dr. Avram disputed that.

Clancy jumped from a window after the attack and remains paralyzed. Dr. John Matthias discussed sleep deprivation and postpartum psychosis on Hidden True Crime, including how some people can lose touch with reality.

What Is Postpartum Psychosis?

The Guardian reported that many Americans have “no concept at all of postpartum psychosis, a more severe psychiatric condition affecting between one and two women per 1,000 births, that can cause hallucinations and paranoid delusions.”

Most women don’t kill their children, but the trial opened up uncomfortable conversations about how bad it can get when symptoms are overlooked.

Worry About Struggling Moms

Survivors are speaking up to bridge the gap. Bridget María Chesterton, a history professor who survived the condition, shared her experience to help people understand the reality of the illness.

Meanwhile, advocate Meghan Cliffel warned that turning a horrific medical crisis into online entertainment might frighten struggling mothers away from seeking psychiatric help.

A Proposed Act

The case has also inspired a Change.org petition calling for a “Lindsay Clancy Act.” The organizer, Shania Rose explained that “many mothers battle with significant physical, emotional, and psychological challenges.”

The write-up goes on to say, “Current postpartum care is woefully inadequate, ending too soon after childbirth, often just at the point when mothers need it the most.”
