Melissa Casillas: Private Search Team Raises New Questions

Reporter Lauren Conlin shared updates regarding Melissa Casillas. Melissa was part of the missing scientists reports and her remains were discovered recently.

But new updates reveal that a private team hired by the family went back to the location where a hiker originally spotted the Los Alamos National Laboratory employee.

The Second Search

Chatting with Jesse Weber on Sidebar this week, the Los Angeles Magazine contributor talked about the second team who allegedly found several items left behind by State Police.

Conlin said “additional bones were found” and tracking dogs reacted to them. She noted that “there was blood on the clothing apparently,” which marks a fresh detail in the case.

The team also located shredded paper. Melissa’s sister looked at the fragments. She thought the writing matched Melissa’s handwriting. Conlin called the situation “pretty concerning” since police missed these items entirely.

The area isn’t easy to reach. Conlin described the spot as “very remote” and deep within the Carson National Forest.

Reporter Says Key Details Raise Questions

She also questioned the official story about Melissa’s missing security badge. A lab employee told her that workers who forget badges usually don’t go home. Instead, “you just go the security office.”

She asked the State Police why they missed the evidence, but they gave a safe, diplomatic response.

Conlin said this raised additional questions for her about what may have happened to Melissa Casillas that morning.

They told her they’re awaiting official determinations from the medical investigator.

Attorney Weighs In

Attorney David Adams also spoke with Jesse Weber about the investigation. He used to be a federal prosecutor. “I certainly suspect that there’s foul play in this case,” Adams stated.

He believes the timeline makes a sudden departure or self-harm unlikely. The day before Melissa Casillas vanished was her twentieth anniversary.

Her daughter graduated high school just three days prior. Adams noted that both of her cell phones had been wiped clean.

The harsh terrain raises more questions. Adams explained it is “nearly impossible to go up there without having assistance.” He said the circumstances led him to suspect that Melissa’s body may have been moved to that remote location.

The state of the shredded paper allegedly supports this idea.

Finding paper so clear “11 months after she went missing” seemed completely bizarre to him given the local rain and snow.

Adams argued that the condition of the paper raised the possibility that the items arrived much later

The Police Finished Their Sweep

The private search team went up after police released the scene. Adams said officers told the family they believed they already had “95 percent” of the remains.

Yet the family’s search team quickly found bones, torn clothes with possible blood, a shoestring, and snack wrappers. They even found an orange peel.

Police later claimed the peel belonged to an officer. Adams didn’t hide his disapproval. He remarked that a scene should stay “clean of any debris left behind by law enforcement.”

Skepticism Over Self-Harm

Authorities initially leaned toward suicide because a gun was near the body. Adams remains skeptical. A preliminary scan showed “no indication that there’s any gunshot wound to the head,” he shared.

Because of this, Adams said he wouldn’t be surprised if the medical investigator determined a different cause of death. The attorney also expressed disappointment with federal authorities.

He thought the FBI should’ve stepped in sooner since Melissa worked at a sensitive lab and died on federal land.

The family is now swinging from hope to an aggressive push for accountability.
