The person identified as allegedly killing his parents, popular filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer, is Nick Reiner, aged 32. By now, you probably heard that the true crime suspect is the son of the duo. This week, more details emerged about him and the circumstances before the deaths.

A Dive Into Nick

On Wednesday, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson joined up with Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber for an in-depth look at the suspect. They talked about the troubles of Nick Reiner as a person, which included addiction to substances and a difficult relationship with his famous family. Besides that, Sheriff Swanson confirmed that a big fight had taken place only one day before the murders.

The exchange between Weber and Swanson depicts, in a very negative light, the past of Nick Reiner. It was a very rough story that Weber told, emphasizing especially the overly emotional side of the childhood years of Reiner and his drug use situation.

Apparently, he started using substances at the age of 15 and later went into rehab 17 times, and even had periods of homelessness. In 2016, during an interview, Nick said: “I had no identity and I had no passions,” and he connected this directly with the shadow of his famous family.

Reconciliation Followed

However, it seems that a time of reconciliation followed. His father, Rob Reiner, directed the film “Being Charlie,” which is a movie co-written by Nick and his father, telling the story of his struggle. As a result, their relationship got better.

Rob once said, “This work with Nick was like me being his therapist.” Outwardly, the family looked like they were getting better. Actually, only several months before the murders, Rob told an NPR podcast that Nick was “in a really good place” and had been clean for over six years.

Relapses & Metal Health

Nevertheless, there were reports of Nick’s relapse in drug abuse and other issues that accompanied it. Weber’s sources that he quoted, revealed that a family friend said that Nick had gone back to drugs and the parents were “scared for Nick and scared that his mental state was deteriorating.”

This tension apparently reached its peak during a Christmas party at Conan O’Brien’s house. In fact, it took place the night before the murders. Police say there was a huge fight there.

The Christmas Party Fight

According to rumors, Nick wasn’t invited to the party, but he showed up anyway. There, he hassled other guests and ended up in a loud confrontation with his dad. The family left, but the next day, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer were dead.

Apparently, the famous husband and his wife died due to multiple stab wounds. Swanson also discussed the incident and how the investigation might proceed. He believed it was a murder done out of passion. “Many times when these stabbings happen,” he said, “they’re trying to release this rage that’s been building up.”

He assured that investigators would be “very thorough,” even going back into the decades since Nick Reiner’s birth to find a motive. “Why did it happen? That’s the bigger question,” Swanson said. Plus, he also talked about how high-profile cases can be made more difficult to investigate.

Viewers React

In the comments section, many true crime followers believed that the root of the murders lay with addiction. One person opined, “From experience I can say he was lying to you and manipulating you. Addicts will lie about everything. They were in an impossible situation.”

Here are a few more responses and opinions from the discussion that followed:

  • Obviously some things were going on behind the scenes. Nick’s sister immediately pointed to her brother as the suspect. It’s a cruel irony that parents love their child so much that they don’t actually see that child. RIP Mr. & Mrs. Reiner.
  • People said he was “floppy” and wild acting as a child. Undiagnosed mental issues? On the spectrum? Schizophrenia? Bipolar? Combine that with drugs later as a teen? Always had mom & dad’s credit card? Lived at home, no job, no responsibilities, boredom. Truly all a recipe for disaster.
  • I’m a Mom and I understand loving them ‘unconditionally.’ But at some point you know you just have to cut [off] a bad toxic person.
