Meghan and Harry: Attention Seekers Amidst Coronavirus Pandemic?

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

Well, while Meghan Markle and Prince Harry search for meaning after their retreat from royal life, they’re getting smacked around a bit by media on both sides of the pond. For those who don’t know already, Meghan and Harry are attempting to rebrand themselves after the huge “Megxit” debacle. In a remarkable effort to remain relevant, the former royal couple recently announced the formation of a new charity.

Unfortunately, the advertisement of “Archewell” amidst the planetary Coronavirus pandemic is being seen as pathetic attention-seeking by Harry especially (and to a lesser degree by Meghan) rather than a genuinely compassionate move. Many view the timing of Prince Harry and Meghan’s announcement as a supreme measure of the couple’s poor taste. It is yet another example, some royal watchers believe, of Meghan and Harry being out of touch with reality.

After all, the U.K. alone is reeling under the attack of the Coronavirus. With almost 60,000 COVID-19 infections and over 6,159 confirmed deaths due to the virus, many see nothing of value in Meghan and Harry’s proclamation. How does “Archewell” help the Duke and Duchess’s new community in America? How are Meghan and Harry helping the royal family in its efforts to support the British people?

What are Prince Harry and Meghan doing from their position as those with the privilege to help humanity, right now, this very moment? Or is everything simply a loud, narcissistic cry of “Look at me! Look at me! Look at me!” from Meghan and Harry these days?

With that in mind, some fans on Twitter and elsewhere have had enough of Meghan and Harry. Their constant tries at staying in the spotlight by the constant cries Meghan and Harry made about staying out of the watchful eye of the media less than a year ago. Now, other royal fans are defending Meghan and Harry.

So the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are still working on the organization they want to build. So what? So Harry and Meghan want to be relevant. And why not? So Meghan and Harry want to carry on with their lives in the middle of a worldwide crisis. Okay, and what … Meghan and Harry are supposed to freeze everything they want to do in life while hoping one day a cure for COVID-19 happens upon the scene?
The real criticism isn’t so much that the timing is all wrong.

It’s the activities Prince Harry and Meghan’s “charity” seeks to undertake. For example, The Hollywood Reporter states that Meghan and Harry’s new “Archewall” will, “include the production of ‘motion picture films, articles, books, audiobooks, podcasts, audiovisual entertainment, television shows, digital entertainment content, and informational programming.’”
Great. Wonderful.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have chosen now to be the moment that they want to create “something that matters.” The problem is Harry and Meghan’s new charity sounds like a film and media production company … hardly the kind of entity that actually makes the world a better place. Or that actually matters.
