The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Mariah and Tessa Not Y&R’s First Attempt At An LGBT Storyline – Previous Plots Squashed Quickly

The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Mariah and Tessa Not Y&R’s First Attempt At An LGBT Storyline - Previous Plots Squashed Quickly“Y&R” spoilers have been digging through the archives, and you might be surprised as to what was found. “Y&R” first aired in 1973, just four years later in 1977 there was a brief relationship between the fabulous Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper) and her friend Joanne Curtis (Kay Heberle).

Viewers went into such outrage over the idea of it, that “Y&R” squashed the storyline dead in its tracks. It was several decades later before any hint of an LGBTQ character would be introduced again. This time in two different storylines Phillip Chancellor (Thom Bierdz), Kathrine’s grandson, and Rafe Torres (Yani Gellman) a young lawyer practicing in Genoa City.

“Y&R” is currently the only soap opera without any openly out and proud LGBTQ characters. Is now the time for CBS’s “Y&R” to be open to an LGBTQ storyline? Over the last few weeks “Y&R” has been in a very slow pace, showing two supposedly straight women in a safe relationship with men, but somehow they feel something is missing.

Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) and Tessa Porter (Cait Fairbanks) have shared longing looks, sweet moments and tender touches, that is until Mariah kisses Tessa. CBS execs are being super cautious with this storyline. There has been no on record comment and a gag order has been put in place keeping the two actresses from speaking with the media.

It is unclear if the restriction regarding this storyline had anything to do with the situation that called for Sally Sussman to be fired. However, Mal Young is now the new head writer in charge of the storylines. It will be interesting to see where this story will go. Will CBS allow them to pursue a same-sex relationship, or will it get squashed like Katherine Chancellor and Joanne Curtis storyline?
