Camryn Grimes (Mariah) is one of many outstanding actors on ‘The Young and the Restless’. The recent placement of her character at GC Buzz telegraphs many upcoming battles that she’s likely to have with her boss Hilary (Mishael Morgan). This pairing should create many opportunities for humor to be expressed, which will nicely balance a current series of serious storylines.
Grimes’ full-time return to the cast in 2014 was widely applauded by longtime fans of the show. The traumatic death of the first character she embodied, Cassie, occurred in 2005. It’s fair to argue that specific storyline is the most controversial Y&R decision of all-time.
Ranking with the best young actors in daytime, the choice to kill off Grimes’ teenage character was quite simply incredible. That choice was made with a major course correction in mind. As to what resulted in the years that followed is highly debatable. Again, it’s arguable to state that decision proved to be deeply unwise. As for Grimes, actors can be reborn in daytime drama even though their characters die.
Y&R’s writing staff created a different type of person for Grimes to play in what are now her early adult years. Mariah initially was the opposite of her twin sister in nearly every way but visual appearance. However, good scripts and Grimes’ deep talent have allowed this character to become likeable. Yes, Cassie probably will always be the role fans feel more closely connected to. But Mariah is loyal, cool, vulnerable, funny and good-hearted. Those qualities, among others, confirm that a second successful alter ego has been created.
Many fun scenes are sure to play out now that Mariah will be battling Hilary. Morgan’s character has been written into unlikable territory far too often in the past. Like Grimes, she possesses the chops to project deeper range. Hopefully time will allow Mariah and Hilary to become pals, instead of brawlers. But in the meantime, let these personalities clash to the amusement of Y&R’s viewers.
