‘The Young and the Restless’ News: Jason Thompson Projects Vulnerability – Character Written in Right Direction

'The Young and the Restless' News: Jason Thompson Projects Vulnerability – Character Written in Right DirectionJason Thompson (Billy Abbott) used to be likable on ‘The Young and the Restless’. However, the last regime pushed this character in a meandering direction. Now that executive producer Mal Young and new head writer Sally Sussman are collaborating, viewers should expect the old spirit of Billy to be seen more often.

Billy Miller set the adult Billy Abbott standard. His multiple Emmy Awards and overall body of work was widely applauded by the audience. But, two actors (David Tom and Burgess Jenkins) have come and gone since Miller departed in early 2014. Thompson’s successful stint at ABC’s ‘General Hospital’ came to an end and he joined the cast at YR at the start of this year.

Former head writer and co-executive producer Chuck Pratt, Jr. gave Thompson a good storyline to start his tenure. Delia (Sophie Pollono) guided the most recent version of her dad away from the afterlife and back to Genoa City. But, then Billy quickly went off the rails.

The entire ‘moody blues’ period that was invented just didn’t feel right. And, Billy’s growing mutual attraction with Phyllis (Gina Tognoni), that was established while Jenkins was still working, was wrongfully taken to the next level. Longtime fans knew that was rater preposterous, even in a soapy sense.

As recent scenes between Billy and Chloe (Elizabeth Hendrickson) and Billy and Victoria (Amelia Heinle) demonstrated, this tormented man just needs someone to talk to. On a most basic level he wants to bond with a compatible personality. Yes, in real life people often make wrong choices (‘Red’) when attempting to rebound from stressful situations, or outright failures. But, this edition of Billy and deserves meaty scripts that allow his humanity to be demonstrated.

Billy Abbott can be restored. An iconic story orchestrator from across the pond and two Y&R alums (Sussman and Kay Alden, Y&R’s former head writer who has returned as a story consultant) possess the chops to make this character great again. Now, it’s time for all involved to deliver.

And many long time fans were very happy with the Phyllis/Billy pairing and felt so much more chemistry than with Victoria and Billy. JUST ACCEPT IT.
