'General Hospital' Scene Of The Week: Sonny Corinthos Learns Jake Is Jason Morgan
‘General Hospital
’ spoilers reveal that it will be some time before Jason Morgan [Billy Miller] recovers his memories of his former life, but those who love him are thrilled he’s back. This week, when Carly Corinthos [Laura Wright] took Jason to see Sonny Corinthos [Maurice Benard] to explain her tardiness at the custody hearing, it seemed like a fool’s gambit. But it worked and turned into the best performance in a week of emotional scenes over #JasonRevealed.

Sonny does anger well and he does love well – we saw the anger this week when he threatened to kill Ava Jerome [Maura West] at the custody hearing. And we see the love often in his interactions with Carly and his kids. But raw emotional Sonny who opens himself up and is 100% vulnerable is a rarer animal that we don’t often witness. But we saw it in spades in the scene with Jason. And man was it powerful stuff – I was reaching for the Kleenex by the time Sonny was done.

What was great about that scene is that “Jake” is a guy that Sonny does not like. He’s been suspicious of him from the start and then jealous when Jake and Carly shared a kiss. But when Jason saved Sonny in the warehouse shooting several weeks ago, Sonny recognized him as Jason back to save him. Even when Liz Webber [Rebecca Herbst] pushed Sonny to believe it was a drug-addled fever dream, he was still convinced Jason was his guardian angel.

This week, it took a hot minute for Sonny to acknowledge the truth of Carly’s news that Jake really is Jason, but then Sonny opened his heart and realized it was true. But then the heartbreak set in when Jason brushed Sonny off and told him flat out he doesn’t know him or what it is to be his friend. Viewers may have expected Sonny to soak in that response and slip into a funk. But Sonny did the unexpected and opened up to Jason and asked him to just listen.

Then, with Carly was positioned between them – as she always was between Sonny and Jason back in the day – Sonny opened up tenderly to his former BFF and explained what they were to each other. Some of the best dialog from this scene was:

“You came to me… you were lost.”

“I could trust you completely.”

“We were closer than brothers.”

“You saved my life in more ways than one.”

“You didn’t know how much your life meant to everybody who loved you.”

“I grieved for you and I would do anything to have you back.”

“Thank God, you came back, you’re home…”

Really, the whole scene was Emmy worthy. Even when Jason rolled his eyes, looked askance and doubtful, Sonny pressed on and put his heart on his sleeve to Jason. It’s not often you see a bromance get this real but Sonny made himself vulnerable to try and win Jason back. And while Jason didn’t seem receptive at the time and couldn’t recall anything, by the time he got back to Liz’s place, sure enough, he had a flash of Sonny back in the day making a similarly emotional appeal.

In a way, Sonny and Sam Morgan [Kelly Monaco] have a similar battle ahead of them. Liz and Carly both embraced Jake as someone they were mysteriously drawn to while Sam and Sonny were more distant. Sam came around when they started investigating Jake’s past and Sonny began to as well when Jake saved him in the warehouse and he had to acknowledge the guy he disliked was his hero. But now, to win Jason back, both Sam and Sonny have to make Jason remember them.

We can expect more powerful scenes like this from Benard as his character fights to get Jason back. Sonny has obstacles ahead, though, since new Jason abhors violence and hates the fact that he’s a skilled killer. And Sonny as much as admitted that he was the one who schooled a much-younger Jason in the ways of the mob world and helped forge him into a master criminal. Ultimately, the mob took Jason from those he loved when Cesar Faison [Anders Hove] “killed” him on the docks three years ago.

This recent emotional encounter between Sonny and Jason raises some big questions. Will Jason blame Sonny for all of his woes? Or will Jason be able to open up to Sonny once his memories start to come back? Will Sonny end up in a bipolar spiral if Jason rejects Sonny because of his mob lifestyle? Is there any chance that the loss of both Jason and Avery could be the catalyzing events that finally get Sonny to quit the mob for good?

This scene was heartrending and I can’t wait to see more like this. Is that the sound of an Emmy nomination for Maurice Benard? Be sure to sign up for the Soap Opera Spy newsletter so you don’t miss any ‘General Hospital’ spoilers as this storyline unfolds in coming days and weeks.
