Prince Harry is facing fresh calls to step down as director of African charity, African Parks, following reports of rape and torture.
Earlier this year, Harry was sued by another charity he willingly stepped down from – Sentebale – over allegations of misandry, racism, and poor work ethics.
Prince Harry Called “Outrageous” For Not Stepping Down From African Parks
For years now, African Parks has been facing different accusations off and on over their poor treatment of locals.
In one report, the rangers were accused of using the most extreme majors to drive locals off the protected land, and in another, they were accused of carrying out rape acts against the local Baka people.
An investigation was launched into the charity, African Parks, which manages 22 national parks and protected areas across 12 countries.
Despite the ongoing situation, Harry chose to attend a fundraising event in Arizona for the non-profit organisation this week.
This prompted Caroline Pearce, the director of Survival International, to tell The Times: “It is outrageous to see Harry’s continued support to African Parks despite the horrific human rights abuses committed by its rangers against the Baka.”
Before becoming a director for the charity, Harry served as the President from 2017-2023.
“We are aware of the serious allegations regarding human rights abuses by eco-guards against local people living adjacent to Odzala-Kokoua national park in the Republic of Congo, which have recently received media attention,” a statement released by the charity to address the claims at the time read.
“We immediately launched an investigation through an external law firm based on the information we had available, while also urging Survival International to provide any and all facts they had. It’s unfortunate that they have chosen not to co-operate, despite repeated requests, and we continue to ask for their assistance.”
“We encourage anyone with knowledge of any abuses to report them to us or to the Congolese law enforcement authorities, which will assist with the investigation and ensure that the perpetrators of any abuses are brought to justice,” it concluded.
Prince Harry is said to be closely involved in assessing the findings of a review by Omnia Strategy LLP, a London-based law firm headed by Cherie Blair, and implementing necessary change. The organization was founded in 2000 to protect Africa’s wildlife.
However, this week, Survival International claimed that “the problems on the ground have not been solved” since last year’s findings, which saw African Parks acknowledge that “human rights abuses have occurred.”
