A Sandy shooting incident in Oregon stopped everyone from enjoying a quiet day on Sunday, May 31. Gunfire rang out just before 4:00 p.m. It went down near Ross Avenue and Evans Street after someone called it in.
An Escalated Incident
Unfortunately, the situation escalated fast. What apparently started off as a domestic dispute became a tough situation.
That’s because when the police arrived, the suspect opened fire on the responding officers. Inevitably, the consequences were scary.
Multiple Lives Lost
Several updates arrived from Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey. In one of them, he explained that it’s “still an active investigation,” adding, “there’s a lot that we cannot share at this time.”
Next, true crime reporters heard that multiple people died. For now though, police keep a lot of details about the victims to themselves.
An Injured Officer
Another regrettable fact is that one Sandy police officer was shot multiple times.

Initially, that didn’t sound at all encouraging because a LifeFlight helicopter airlifted the officer to a nearby hospital.
Fortunately, the chief delivered some good news regarding the wounded officer.
He said, “The officer’s in stable condition and I’m extremely thankful that I can tell you that they are expected to survive.”
A Sad Day For A Small Town
Next, Chief Huskey frankly described the incident as a major blow to the town:
This is a traumatic event for our community and the Sandy Police Department and I know many people are grieving.”
Additionally, he asked for folks to keep the victims, the injured officer, and all first responders in their thoughts.
The Standoff & Surrender
Recapping what went down during the Sandy shooting, it seems that immediately after initial gunfire, authorities issued a strict “shelter-in-place order” in the neighborhood per Katu.com.
As the facts emerged, the gunman barricaded himself inside a nearby house, which forced a tense standoff.
After about four hours, the suspect in the Sandy shooting surrendered to law enforcement.
Withheld Information
While he didn’t take any questions from reporters, after a long day, Chief Huskey confirmed the arrest, saying, “The suspect is in custody…they surrendered to law enforcement…he surrendered peacefully.”
For now, the name of the shooter hasn’t been released. However, given the number of victims, probably that arrives fairly soon.
The Investigation Begins
Right now, the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team runs the incident as an active investigation.
Chief Huskey asked for patience, explaining, “I understand everyone wants answers and information right now but this remains a very dynamic and active investigation.”
Community Steps Up
KVAL shared that Sandy Mayor Kathleen Walker spoke out about the sad fact that small towns are not actually “shielded by distance or size.”
Local groups and faith communities already gather resources to support the victims’ families and the first responders.
Viewers React
Unfortunately, in the comments section of the video shared by KGW News, many people felt upset because random mass shootings seem more common these days.
One person penned, “This is so normal now and that makes this tragedy even more horrific. I am so sorry.”
Here are a few more responses and many of them reflected appreciation for the law enforcement team:
- Huskey is an absolute legend, such a great and professional Police Chief. Thankful for him, the all officers who responded. Wishing a speedy recovery for the injured officer, and condolences to the victims and families who lost their loved ones.
- Absolutely gut wrenching to hear this happened today. I know for a fact this dude is going to have zero sympathy from anyone behind bars. Which is extremely deserved in this moment
