Michilae Herring told a South Carolina emergency dispatcher on June 30, 2026, that her four-year-old daughter was missing. She claimed the little girl, Javeayah Harris, was out back chasing chickens and simply vanished. Read on to find out more about the alleged deception
A Frantic Search
The frantic call kickstarted a massive response in Aiken County. Hundreds of officers spent days combing through thousands of acres.
But according to local authorities, the entire search was based on a lie.

Investigators soon discovered that Javeayah had been dead for at least a month before her mother ever picked up the phone.
The Shocking Backstory
The details only got worse from there. Per WIS-TV.com, police arrested Michilae Herring and the girl’s father, Johmarea Harris. Arrest warrants allege that Javeayah died between May 1 and June 15 after being physically abused by her mother.
The warrants state the child had a severe head injury. Instead of getting help, the parents did nothing. According to the police, both parents confessed to the abuse and to destroying the body.
There is a shocking twist to the timing. The very same night Michilae Herring reported Javeayah missing, she went into labor. She gave birth to a new baby girl at the hospital while search teams were out looking for her deceased daughter.
What the Media Uncovered
In a video covering the case, host Lauren Matthias of the Hidden True Crime podcast pointed out some major warning signs.
She highlighted a news interview the father gave to WRDW before his arrest. Matthias noticed he kept using the past tense, calling Javeayah “friendly” and “respectful” and noting “she was a real smart kid.”
He also told reporters that Herring was only “a little tore up” about the disappearance.
Dive Teams Recover Human Remains
On July 9, 2026, Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer shared a truly horrific update reported by WYFF4. Dive teams found partial human remains in the Cedar Creek Reservoir.
Sawyer alleged the parents used corrosive chemicals to dissolve the child’s body before pouring what was left into the water.
“In my 37-year career in law enforcement, I’ve never ever heard of anything so horrific,” Sawyer said.
During the news conference, officers stood behind the sheriff wearing pink ties and ribbons. Pink was Javeayah’s favorite color.
The Next Court Date
According to WIS-TV, a former prosecutor breaking down the case noted that the parents face 20 years to life in prison.
They have been denied bond and they also face charges relating to the destruction of human remains.
Their next court date is September 18, 2026.
Neighbors told local outlets they rarely saw Javeayah outside. Family members also shared that they had called Child Protective Services multiple times over the past two years.
According to local reports, Javeayah’s grandmother is now caring for the newborn baby.
