True crime isn’t confined to the young and the capable, and folks were a bit shocked to hear that a 76-year-old retired woman allegedly shot an older man in the face with a flare gun. It all went down at a seniors village in Long Island recently. Read on for more details.
The Shooting After An Argument
Just because some folks might be older, it doesn’t mean sweetness, light, and granny’s favorite cookies, it seems. News 12 on YouTube reported in video coverage, which you can see further down in this article, that things got heated between neighbors at the Belmont Villas facility.

People confirmed that Kathleen Schuman, a neighbor to “67-year-old Richard Catrone,” ended up arrested. The outlet noted that apparently, the duo had a longstanding beef with each other. Notably, a witness talked about how it involved a cat, and/or a dog. Anyway, clearly fed up with it, she allegedly shot him in the face with a flare gun, and he ended up needing stitches.
Charged In Court
The older woman, who presumably won’t live next door to her victim in the future, arrived in court on September 9 and reappears on September 12. Her charges are “second-degree assault causing injury with a weapon (an incendiary device).”

More details emerged, and apparently, she’d been away from the village, but after only a week of returning, the neighbors got back into their tussle over pets. Catrone claimed her cat upset his dog. Meanwhile, she was fed up with it. Out walking, she decided to do something about it, apparently. She shot the man while he was walking his dog.
One can only imagine the trauma and the gossip going on behind closed doors right now. After all, retirement villages for old people should be restful and stress-free.
Reactions on Social Media
When people viewed the report on YouTube, reactions to the true crime story were mixed. One person wrote, “Not too many people can say they was shot by a flare gun.”
As the management of the village distanced themselves from the violent incident, another commenter asked, “Why would the management company feel the need to distance themselves from this attack? As if people watching this would say it’s the management company’s fault or say every resident there is violent and dangerous, this is obviously an isolated incident!”
Additionally, as Ring camera footage already emerged, another critic asked, “Why are we saying ‘allegedly’ when there is video of it?”
Well, the simple answer is that until 76-year-old Kathleen Schuman is convicted of the crime, she remains innocent in the eyes of the law.
