Survivor is currently airing Season 49, with Season 50 coming sometime in 2026. There has been buzz that the show could have a “Golden Survivor” spinoff, and roll out much like another reality television spinoff, The Golden Bachelor. The series’ host, Jeff Probst, recently commented on the idea and offered his thoughts.
Survivor’s Staying Power
You don’t make it to 50 seasons without being a fan favorite, and Survivor continues to dominate viewership in the reality show spectrum. In fact, it was the series that launched the television concept, which has since exploded.
In fact, TV fans couldn’t imagine a world without reality TV, right? From the tribe dynamics to the drama and challenges, it continues to draw long-time viewers, as well as new fans.
Jeff Probst On A “Golden Survivor”
Much like the Golden Bachelor, a “Golden Survivor” would showcase contestants competing for 1 million dollars who were over the age of 50. With that said, Probst isn’t a fan of the idea, but not for the reason some might think.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Probst stated that, “Based on the number of people over, let’s say 50, who apply and who we believe are interesting and compelling enough to be on the show and we believe can truly handle the intense physicality — I think if you just limited it to 50-and-over casting, it would be difficult to do two times per year.”
He adds, “You’re looking at 40 people. I just don’t think it would work, personally.”
It’s important to note that those who apply for the show go through a rigorous screening process. It’s not only the fact that they need to be in a certain physical condition, but also their personalities also need to be intriguing enough for the reality television show.
Still, just because Probst doesn’t believe the idea is plausible, it doesn’t mean the powers that be won’t push the idea, so only time will tell if Golden Survivor makes its way to the airwaves at some point.
