Neighbours’ Alan Fletcher Teases Karl Kennedy Storylines And Affairs

It’s been twenty years since beloved Neighbour Karl Kennedy did the dirty and had an affair with nurse Sarah, but fans never forget!

Alan Fletcher joined the Australian soap in 1994 playing Doctor Karl Kennedy and has been at the centre of many explosive storylines. The most shocking of these, ‘The Sarah affair’, had viewers gripped. Karl – an upstanding family man and local doctor – could not deny his increasing feelings for his co-worker and they ended up kissing in the 1997 winter finale, a moment that The Age called one of the soaps “most memorable” cliff hangers.

The storyline boosted the soap’s viewing figures significantly, with viewers tuning in all over the world. Alan believes the boost in ratings came at a time when the show needed much revival, and was very successful in doing so.

Speaking to TV WEEK, he said, “The glory days were starting to fade a little bit as the original cast started to disappear. And so that storyline, and a lot of really other good storylines, was really when Neighbours underwent a renaissance and it really revitalised the show.”

Nicola Charles, who played Sarah, has since returned to the show but thankfully for Karl and Susan shippers has not managed to ruin their relationship again. Karl almost did that himself though, by having a second affair with Izzy Hoyland, played by singer and actress Natalie Bassingthwaighte. Izzy is returning to Erinsborough in 2018, so will Karl and Susan’s relationship be in trouble again?

Hopefully not, as Alan revealed that without doubt his favourite ever co-star is Jackie Woodburne, who plays his on-screen wife Susan. He declared, “The highlight of Neighbours will always be my relationship with Jackie. Jackie and I are firm and fast friends which makes my work life so enjoyable.”

Alan was then asked who he would like to see make a return to the show; would it be Sarah again to continue the affair story, or has his wish come true in Izzy returning? Thankfully for Susan, Alan said neither of these. Instead, he would love to see Jesse Spencer return to Neighbours, who played the Kennedy’s youngest son Billy. “It would be marvelous to see him again,” Alan said.
