'Days of Our Lives' News: Frances Reid Remembered on Anniversary of Death – Portrayed Alice Horton On 'DOOL' for 43 Years“Days of Our Lives” actress Frances Reid [Alice Horton] passed away on February 3, 2010. There are so many memories of both the actress and her “DOOL” character that fans want to remember. Today we pay tribute to one of the great ladies of daytime television.

Frances Reid was born Anna May Priest in Wichita Falls, Texas on December 9, 1914. Her family moved to Berkley, California when Reid was just a young girl. The acting bug bit Frances and she began her career in 1938 with a small role in the film “Man-Proof.” The film starred Myrna Loy and Rosalind Russell.

In 1939 Reid made her Broadway debut in “Where There’s a Will There’s a Way” as Juliette Lecourtois. In 1946 Frances starred as Roxanne opposite Jose Ferrer in the Broadway production of “Cyrano de Bergerac.”

The first soap opera role Frances took on was the title role in the radio serial “Portia Faces Life” in 1954. Before joining the cast of “DAYS” and creating the iconic character Alice Horton, Frances portrayed Grace Baker on “As the World Turns” from 1959 until 1962. The next soap opera role the actress took on was that of Rose Pollack on the “Edge of Night” in 1964.

From the very first moment “Days of Our Lives” premiered on November 8, 1965 Frances Reid made the Horton matriarch Alice her own. Alice was married to Dr. Tom Horton [MacDonald Carey] and the couple had five children. Alice and Tom’s world revolved around Mickey, Bill, Addie, Marie and Tom, Jr.

In 2003 and 2004 TPTB decided to kill off many of the daytime drama’s most beloved and veteran characters. Frances’s last appearance on “DOOL” was December 26, 2007. However, she remained on contract until her death – February 3, 2010.

Reid received a Daytime Emmy nomination in 1979 for Best Supporting Actress and in 1987 for Best Lead Actress. In 2004 Frances received a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Off-screen Frances married actor Philip Bourneuf on June 27. 1940. The accomplished stage actor died on March 23, 1979. The couple did not have any children, and Frances never remarried.
