'The Young and the Restless' (Y&R) Interview: Camryn Grimes Speaks On Portraying Mariah Copeland vs. Cassie Newman

“The Young and the Restless” (Y&R) has seen Camryn Grimes portray both Cassie Newman and Mariah Copeland – another set of twins viewers didn’t know about. How does the actress feel about both characters and which one has she enjoyed portraying the most?

Camryn Grimes is having a blast playing the sharp-tongued Mariah Copeland according to a recent interview with ABC Soaps In Depth – October 18 through October 23 – but she’s not playing favorites. But she admits playing Mariah has been a lot of fun – though she worries that sometimes the snark may be too much. “I’m always afraid that I’m too bitchy all the time,” the actress reveals. But fans don’t seem to think it’s too much – viewers seem to enjoy the way the character tells it like it is – especially when it comes to Summer Newman (Hunter King) – and Grimes has been surprised by the audience’s response. “They’re kind of taken with the quips and the jabs and the insults! So I’m glad to keep playing that part.

But the smart mouth and rough edges aren’t the only differences between Cassie Newman and Mariah Copeland. Sharon and Nick’s daughter lead a fairly sheltered life, growing up surrounded by a family who loved her. When she died as a young teenager she hadn’t had the opportunity to experience all that life throws at you. Mariah, on the other hand, hasn’t had a much love in her love – except for a psychopath named Ian Ward (Ray Wise). She’s jaded and guarded – and is still struggling with accepting the love of her mother Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) and half-brother Noah Newman (Robert Adamson) – but she and younger half-sister Faith Newman (Alyvia Alyn Lind) have grown very close.

Camryn would like for “Y&R” writers to explore Mariah’s softer side – and she is sure that there is one deep down – and would like to see them find a balance between both for the character. But Camryn doesn’t want to see Mariah get too soft. “In the long term for Mariah, you want her to have that edge to her. You want to keep that chip on her shoulder.”

Are we going to see a softer side to Mariah on “The Young and the Restless”? Her friendship – turned almost romance that didn’t quite work out – with Kevin Fisher (Greg Rikaart) seems to make Mariah happy and maybe that friendship will be the thing that helps bring out more and more of that – but still keep Mariah on her toes – and keep that biting wit still coming.
