Perhaps one of the most damaging claims in Earl Spencer’s book is the one where he discussed a phone call he had with King Charles, shortly after the death of his sister, Princess Diana.
King Charles Pushes Back On Diana Claims
Apart from the King reportedly going “ballistic” over Charles Spencer’s request that Diana’s two sons not walk behind their mother’s coffin at the funeral procession, he also claimed that Charles allegedly told Spencer about his conviction that Diana’s memory would soon be washed away by time.
When this particular excerpt hit the media, Buckingham Palace/the King’s spokesperson was quick in delivering his response, with the the Palace appeared to question Spencer’s recollection due to grief.
The statement reads, “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”
Earl Spencer Refuses To Back Down
The Palace’s pushback prompted the Earl to hop onto an interview and declare that his accounts were not false. “I can tell you here and now, those are exactly the words he said,” he told the BBC, going on to note that he’s spoken on the phone with King Charles on two different occasions.
Spencer, who described himself as ‘hyper-alert further claimed, “Genuinely, that is what he said. I don’t hear him saying he didn’t say that.”
Queen Elizabeth’s Reported Reaction To Diana’s Crash
Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, and this year, her brother has decided to come forward with new details about it.
Even though Earl Spencer wasn’t in the room when the Queen received news of Diana’s death, he claims to have been made aware of her reaction to it.
“When the Queen had heard the first news of Diana’s being in a traffic accident, she had asked, ‘What is she up to now?’ This, before the seriousness of it all became clear,” he wrote.
Following her death, the Queen had also reportedly offered to restore Diana’s HRH styling via her private secretary. This, the Earl says, he viewed as a “tetchy” response to his sister’s death.
