On July 27, Christian Howard made his daytime debut as the new Ethan Lovett. But the soap didn’t address the recast, nor did the character’s original portrayer. Will Nathan Dean be back?
Nathan Dean’s Return To GH
General Hospital fans had been clamoring for an Ethan Lovett return for nearly a decade. The soap gods seemed to answer their prayers in early 2026, when Nathan Dean waltzed back in to Port Charles.
In March, the fan fave explained in an interview that his return to General Hospital would be brief and his contract would just be for a few months.
Showrunner Frank Valentini also echoed his statements with comments like “we’re happy to have him while we can.” Sure, Dean’s “visit” was long but it was never intended to be permanent.
Nathan Dean and his wife also announced that they were expecting baby number three in March and her dude date should be right around the corner (if she hasn’t already given birth). It’s possible she went in to labor earlier than expected and that’s why the actor left so abruptly.
Is The Original Ethan Lovett Returning
Clearly the soap still has more storyline for the character of Ethan Lovett. But, if Nathan Dean’s contract is up, then they had no choice but to bring in a recast.
Some fans are hopeful that Nathan just took a few weeks off for the birth of his third child with wife Kristen. If that is the case, then Christian Howard’s recast could be temporary. However, nobody from General Hospital is confirming or denying Nathan’s status at the soap.
