Inept Criminals: When Burglaries Go Hilariously Wrong

From thieves caught eating sandwiches to burglars defeated by GPS trackers and selfies, some criminals make arresting them surprisingly easy.

True crime podcasters love a mastermind, the kind who plans heists like chess moves. But plenty of folks seem to be the most inept criminals on the planet. They lack the basic skills to pull off a simple burglary.

Over the years, police around the world have encountered some spectacularly unsuccessful criminals.

According to several police reports, their own mistakes do them in. Snacks distract them, or tech baffles them. By all accounts, they aren’t naturally suited to their chosen lifestyle.

The Packed Lunch Burglar

Costin Stan broke into a Nottingham flat. Police records confirm that homeowners caught him on the landing. He didn’t bolt. He asked for food.

Officers arrived a bit later and probably made the easiest arrest in the history of their collective law enforcement careers.

They found him sitting in the kitchen, calm as anything. As the outlet Need to Know noted, he was just “munching [a] sandwich in [the] flat he broke into.”

When the stolen jewelry turned up in his pockets, the result was 32 months in prison.

Others With Food Cravings

Over in Florida, a man had similar cravings. He broke into a Safety Harbor house and started cooking breakfast. The homeowner woke up and found him at the stove.

The burglar told them to “go back to sleep.” Police arrested him shortly after. Some people just need that midnight snack.

When the munchies defeat all caution, that definitely deserves the label of inept criminal. Do you agree?

Selfie-Taking Isn’t A Great Idea

Germain Ibrahim Fofana planned to steal some valuables and succeeded in getting away with thousands of pounds worth of jewelry in London. However, in his brief moment of success, he left his mobile at the scene. While police investigated, the phone lit up with a text.

The screensaver was a selfie. A shop assistant identified him from that picture. According to the Daily Mail, police simply asked, “Have you seen this man?” and the case cracked open.

The Game Cam Stunt

Another genius pulled a similar stunt in Camden, South Carolina. He stole a game camera from a storage facility. However, he didn’t realize it was active.

The device sent photos straight to the owner. Multiple selfies of the thief showed up. He was holding his new stolen camera in each one. His arrest followed shortly.

The GPS Tracker Mistake

Hidden trackers are catching inept criminals as well. It’s becoming a pattern. A Sheridan, Indiana, resident got tired of his political yard signs disappearing.

He attached a tracker to the last one. It got stolen. Police tracked the signal to a suspect’s house. They got a search warrant and put an end to the suspect’s rather peculiar interest in political signage.

In California, a woman once stole some expensive cosmetics. But she missed the tracking device inside one product. Police followed the signal and handcuffed her.

A Newsweek report described similar tracking traps. A teenager once caught a package thief using a GPS device. The tech works.

Robbers in San Antonio fell for it too. They stole convenience store cash wrapped around a tracking unit.

Left-Behind Items

True crime fans might be a bit shocked to know how often people leave their personal items behind at the scene of a crime. An elderly burglar broke into a home in Spain, but, he forgot his phone when he made his getaway.

He called the victim hours later to ask for it back, per The Local Spain. He was arrested.

A career criminal in Yorkshire left bloodstains at a fabric factory. Forensics identified him easily. Straight to jail he went.

Another thief in Hickory, North Carolina, broke into a house to live it up. He took a shower. He ate food. He stole clothes. He still managed to lose his wallet and ID at the scene.

Criminologists, no doubt, debate how that happens when they gather for year-end functions.

Defeated by Stupidity

One of the stranger tales of criminal incompetence involves a bank robber who fainted mid-heist, but despite the distressing circumstances, he still managed to hand his demand note to the teller while medics worked on him.

In another example of an inept criminan, a shoplifter stole a bottle of vodka but he also wrote his name and contact number on a note that asked the clerk out.

That was a failed effort because he didn’t ever get his date, or at least, not with the checkout clerk.

Another suspect fled a robbery by jumping a fence. He landed in a nudist resort. He was the only clothed person there. Rather unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long for the cops to nab their man as he stood out instantly.

Porch Pirates & More

Porch pirates face unique obstacles too. In a clip shared by the LOL! Network on YouTube, comedians joked about thieves falling for homemade traps. One got scared off by a “floating horse head.”

In Washington, another burglar broke into a home and cooked waffles and a “Lean Cuisine meal,” before using the toilet, which woke up the homeowners. Some criminals just want to feel at home, it seems.
