Back in early December, true crime followers anticipated a complex trial against Desmond Burks in the murder of Dr. Devon Hoover. Set to start in January, the anticipated long-drawn out legal affair certainly didn’t seem likely to end suddenly. But it did. Read on for more details.

Three years Of Legal Procedures

True crime followers stayed in touch with the Detroit murder case of the neurosurgeon for three years. However, according to a report from WXYZ in late January, Desmond Burks decided to plead guilty to shooting the doctor and stashing him in “a crawl space.”

Probably, it is just as well, because the outlet noted that legal experts had lots of evidence against Burks.

While a lot of it seemed circumstantial, probably, a guilty verdict would have been the ultimate outcome.

Relief For The Victim’s Family

The outlet cited a former prosecutor, Todd Flood, who said that it saves a lot of mental trauma for the family. He said:

I’ve been in murder trials, too many to count and the victim’s family, it’s trauma. It’s peeling back wounds. It’s taking off the Band-Aid. So to spare them this ugliness, this trial of listening and going through all of this, that’s some mercy.

The Crime Was Chilling

Dr. Hoover, aged 53, lived in a lovely home, but he ended up shot in the head twice back in 2023. Burks rolled him up in a carpet and stashed him out of sight. Mainly, digital evidence helped in the arrest of Desmond Burks.

During their investigations, detectives located and eventually tied Burks to the scene through digital and physical evidence. In fact, there were over 4,000 text messages between the two men. Additionally, a fingerprint was located in a blood-stained Range Rover.

Charge Downgraded

The plea deal saw Desmond Burks charged with a lesser crime. So, instead of first-degree murder, he ended up pleading guilty to second-degree murder. While that means he could serve between 35 to 60 years in prison, unlike a first-degree charge, he could possibly get parole one day.

Other lesser charges include larceny, using a laptop to help commit a crime, and charges relating to firearms. Those crimes probably add another five years onto his sentence. On a side note, apart from killing Dr. Devon Hoover, Burks admitted to the death of someone else in a road rage incident in 2024.

Burks will find out his sentence on February 20, 2026. When FOX 2 Detroit shared the guilty plea on YouTube, plenty of people had a chance to let off steam.

Viewers React

One viewer opined, “This breathing piece of trash playing semantics with the judges about minute details of the case. He killed two people and was already a felon. Why isn’t this a death penalty case? No way they should have let him plea. Now taxpayers have to pay for him to live. It’s crazy!”

Here are a few more responses from the discussion:

  • Thus (sic) man is so stupid he can’t even remember to say YES to the judge.
  • Pleaded guilty to murder. Sentence? The rest of your Life and a rainy day. Do you understand that?
  • Scumbag running around murdering gay men…
