A rather intriguing murder trial moves forward in Detroit and January sees it play out in court after the murder of a respected neurosurgeon, Dr. Devon Hoover. Complex, and largely based on circumstantial evidence, it should interest true crime followers who enjoy a bit of a head-scratching trial.
Recapping The Death & The Suspect
Investigative journalist, Brian Entin, discussed the upcoming trial on his podcast, Brian Entin Investigates, on Monday. Notably, he described it as “a twisted, twisted case.” Then, he reminded his followers that the victim, Dr. Hoover, was a popular neurosurgeon found brutally murdered in his mansion in April 2023.

Authorities charged Desmond Burks, then 34, with the crime. After a protracted investigation, they alleged Burks and Dr. Hoover shared an intimate relationship. Allegedly, Burks charged the doctor for services. It took a long time, but it does seem as if the investigation uncovered lots of evidence.
For instance, police found Burks’s fingerprint in Hoover’s blood-stained Range Rover. They also recovered one of the doctor’s expensive watches from Burks’ home, and, they combed through more than 4,000 text messages between the two men.
A Huge Workload For The Prosecution
The prosecution’s case appears extensive. In fact, their investigation covered multiple states and countries. They collected hundreds of pieces of evidence. However, the defense seems to feel they have a good fight ahead, and they feel it’s all way too circumstantial. Entin noted the defense argument that “anger over a sour or complicated relationship does not mean that Burks actually killed the doctor.”

Professor Wright from Detroit joined Brian Entin to discuss the upcoming trial. And, he admitted there certainly seems to be a lot of supposition. “The case here is circumstantial,” he said. “And it involves the highest penalty that Michigan law at least allows.” Certainly, Burks faces a charge of first degree murder, which carries life without parole. Naturally, the serious charge increases pressure for a potential plea deal before the trial.
The Defense Angle?
Interestingly, the defense may focus on Dr. Hoover’s private life. They hinted he “lived a dangerous lifestyle.” And, the professor agreed this would be a possible strategy. “Without a doubt, the sort of nature of Dr. Hoover’s relationships with people beyond Mr. Burks will be something the defense explores,” he told Entin. So, of course, the suggestion is that someone else could be responsible.
Apparently, a judge recently rejected a defense motion to dismiss the case. Therefore, the path is clear for the proceedings to begin. But, that doesn’t rule out a possible plea deal. For now, true crime followers need to be patient to see what plays out. But one thing for sure, plenty of people will no doubt look forward to the trial in early 2026.
Crime Followers React
Interest in the case of the doctor seems high. In the comments section, one follower wrote, “I lived in Puerto Vallarta and have seen these rich gay guys pick up the worst misfits, drug addicts and criminals and take them to their villa or hotel room and a lot of stuff like this happens, its a very dangerous life style. RIP.”
Here are a few other responses from the discussion area:
- Ever since I heard about Dr. Hoover’s murder I have been searching for info about the progress of this case. It is very sad that a doctor who contributed so much to his patients and to his community came to this tragic end. I hope this trial will be covered on television.
- Thank you for covering this. This man was a family member of mine’s best friend. It really rocked the family and community.
- The accused shouldn’t be circulating in society whether he committed this murder or not. He beat a man to death in a road rage incident. That should be death penalty. That is barbaric!!!
