A rural mail route in Wilkes County, North Carolina, became the scene of a homicide investigation involving Brandi Byrd Reynolds, a 35-year-old United States Postal Service employee and mother of two.
In late June, Reynolds was allegedly kidnapped and shot to death while working her route in Hays. Authorities have charged 56-year-old William Craig Durham with her murder.
The timeline leading up to Reynolds’ death reveals a prior legal connection between the victim and the man accused of killing her.
Prior Legal Connection
The connection between Reynolds and the suspect, 56-year-old William Craig Durham, surfaced four months before the shooting.
In February 2026, authorities charged Durham with stealing a credit card that belonged to Reynolds. He faced allegations that he attempted to use the stolen card.
The legal case did not last long. According to reporting by The New York Times, court records show “the credit card case was dismissed just weeks before the murder.”
Alleged History
State prosecutors have not publicly explained why they dropped those specific charges.
During a recent court appearance, a member of Reynolds’ family alleged that Durham had previously tracked the mail carrier, threatened her, and broken into the family home.
Those allegations have not been independently verified by investigators.
The Incident & Arrest
The situation turned fatal on a Friday afternoon. Law enforcement records show the incident began around 4:16 p.m. while Reynolds was delivering mail on her usual rural route.
Warrants state that Durham restrained Reynolds against her will. He moved her from her mail truck into another vehicle. Investigators claim that he drove her to Monteith Acres Road.
According to an ABC News report, authorities stated that the suspect kidnapped Reynolds “for the purpose of terrorizing her” and causing “serious bodily injury.”
Investigators allege that Durham then shot Reynolds inside the vehicle.
Police officers responded quickly to reports of a missing postal worker and a suspicious vehicle. They found Reynolds dead at the scene. Deputies arrested Durham the same day near the location of the shooting.
Legal Charges and Prior Criminal Record
The state of North Carolina filed severe charges against Durham immediately following his arrest. He faces one count of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree kidnapping.
Durham has an extensive history with the state court system. According to The Hindustan Times, “Durham has served time for second-degree kidnapping, assault on a female and possession of a gun by a felon, among other offenses.”
Because of this violent history and the specific details of the June 26 attack, a judge denied bail. Durham remains in custody at the Wilkes County jail without bond.
Durham has not spoken publicly about the allegations. His attorney declined to comment on a potential motive for the shooting.
A Community in Mourning
The killing devastated the rural community and left Reynolds’ two daughters without either parent.
Reynolds was the mother of Bayla Faith and Adalyn “Addy” Hope.
Tragedy had already struck the family months earlier. According to ABC News, Reynolds’ husband, Brent Andrew Reynolds, died in a car crash in December 2025.
The girls lost both of their parents within roughly six months.
According to the Daily Mail, the children are now “in the care of their maternal grandmother and two aunts” near Roaring River, North Carolina.
Neighbors and local postal workers organized prayer circles to support the family.
