Don Diamont Says Yellowstone Is A Soap Opera

Don Diamont’s recent comment about ‘Yellowstone’ seems like one of those harmless little comments that could divide the internet for days.

However, while Diamont might have linked ‘Yellowstone’ to a soap opera, he didn’t exactly do it in the full literal sense.

Speaking on the popularity of streaming shows like ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ Diamont said it calls to mind the ‘90s frenzy for soap operas.

“Well, listen, what were there? I may be off slightly here, but I believe there were 15 soaps on at one time,” Diamont told PEOPLE in a recent exclusive interview.

Diamont has largely been a soap star, from getting his start in ‘Days of Our Lives’ to joining ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ in 2009.

Of course, when it comes to that subject, he certainly knows the soap world well, and in the chat with PEOPLE, he talked about the unique relationship soaps create with their audience.

“It is very generational,” Diamont noted of soap opera viewership. “The audience builds relationships with daytime characters that are different than nighttime, than film, even nighttime soap operas. I mean, for all intents and purposes, Yellowstone or Grey’s Anatomy or any of these shows, they are soap operas.”

He continued, “Maybe Grey’s Anatomy is a really good example in nighttime, as a nighttime soap opera, of the loyalty of an audience. An audience feels that those characters are almost family.”

“Well, we’re on five days a week, 52 weeks a year, no rebrand. And so often, it is, ‘God, I started watching the show with my mom,’ or, ‘I started watching with my grandmother and my mom, and now I might watch it with my son or my daughter.’ That’s really, I think, the thing. You really build almost a familial relationship with daytime characters,” he explained.

While ‘Yellowstone’ by no means has the run of the typical Soap Opera, having ended in 2024 after just five seasons, it continues to live on in the way of its multiple spinoffs.
