The Rookie Season 9 Premiere Date Revealed, Plus New Spinoff Details

The Fall TV season is upon us and our favorite shows are slowly returning.  What about The Rookie on ABC though?

The popular Nathan Fillion series actually won’t be returning with new episodes for a few more months.  Keep reading for all of the details!

The Rookie Returns With New Episodes

The Rookie Season 8 finale aired back in May 2026 and the episode ended with a massive cliffhanger.

Fans will recall that Tim and Lucy finally made things official and got engaged on the beach, only too be kidnapped right after the proposal.  Sadly, we won’t know Tim and Lucy’s fate until the Season 9 premiere.

According to The Rookie spoilers, all new episodes will return to ABC on Wednesday January 6 at 9:00 PM.

The popular series is actually a mid-season show and won’t be airing new episodes this fall.

The wait will be worth it because when The Rookie returns, an all new spinoff called Rookie North will premiere afterwards.

The Rookie Gets A Spinoff

Earlier this year ABC announced that they were adding to their Rookie collection and filming a spinoff for the popular series.

Jay Ellis will be leading the new spinoff and teasers say the network has another potential hit on their hands.

The official teaser for The Rookie spinoff reads, “John Nolan, once the oldest rookie in the LAPD, now uses his life experience, determination, and sense of humor to keep up with rookies 20+ years his junior.

John and the team must navigate the intense, unpredictable nature of their jobs and personal challenges, while uplifting the next generation of first responders.”

Rookie North will premiere on January 6, following the Season 9 premiere of the original Rookie.  Are you looking forward to Nathan Fillion and the cast returning this winter?
