A young couple’s car crash a few months ago was viewed as a tragic accident. However, it became a true crime investigation and Leigha Mumby from Flagler Beach, Florida, was charged with “vehicular homicide” after a strange turn in the tale. Read on for more details.
Not An Accident?
Daniel Waterman initially survived the car wreck but he was in a coma. However, unfortunately for her, he woke up and accused his girlfriend of a deliberate murder attempt. Later, he passed away but not before the cops found out his story. Notably, Leigha entered a plea of not guilty.

Inside Edition reported on Wednesday, that the terrible ordeal involved a Honda plunging into roadside trees at 95 miles per hour. In the footage shown, folks could hear 24-year-old Leigha Mumby screaming out asking for help, thinking that her 22-year-old boyfriend had died.
Meanwhile, it was unnoticed by her that Daniel’s iPhone already dialed 911. As the passenger, Daniel “took the brunt of the crash,” and due to his neck and back being broken, doctors put him in a medically induced coma.
Anchor Eva Pilgrim related the initial story and then Les Trent, a correspondent, took up the tale. He explained that after Waterman came out of his coma, the case took a different turn. Not being able to talk, he resorted to a special “letter board” to slowly tell the story that would change the investigation.
Accused Of Trying To Murder Him
The first thing Waterman did was accuse his girlfriend of “trying to kill him.” He explained how Mumby just told him “she was pregnant” and was also mad at the texts from another woman. Afterward, he “actually wrote it down that Leigha deliberately left the highway and crashed into the trees.”
Citing him, Les said, “I don’t care what happens. You get what you deserve.” Unfortunately, Daniel Waterman died of his injuries after an eight-month battle for his life. So, the true crime case became a homicide.
Arrested At The Hospital
Recalling the passing of her son, Daniel’s mother said, “It was one of the most heartbreaking things. It really is like, how could someone do this to my son?” In an unexpected twist, Leigha was charged with vehicular homicide when she was arrested at the hospital where she had gone to visit Daniel.
Eva Pilgrim noted at the end of the report that “Leigha Mumby has pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide” and she “reportedly told the police that she didn’t remember anything before the crash.” The case is still going on with the court trying to find out what really happened on that fatal day.
Reactions In The Comments
True crime stories always get the attention of people. So, the comments flowed in thick and fast. One viewer wrote, “He refused to go without justice. What a fighter.”
Here are a few more responses in the discussion that followed:
- Her showing up to the hospital, and acting like she cares for him is extremely narcissistic. I hope she never gets out.
- Him being able to come back to tell them that before passing away was a miracle of justice. May she rot behind bars.
- She is fine and does not remember anything leading up to the crash. The man who was in a coma woke up and remembered everything about the crash.
- It’s scary to think that it would’ve been just another accident without knowing the truth.
Of course, for now, Leigha Mumby is presumed innocent until found guilty. But in the court of public opinion, it seems everyone believes she murdered her boyfriend.
