A disturbing death from Bali exposed flaws in how authorities handle overseas deaths. Actually, the tragedy began as a simple vacation. In May, 23-year-old Queensland man Byron Haddow flew to Bali for a vacation. Sadly, four days after he arrived, something terrible happened at his villa and he died there. Despite three other Australians being with him, local police struggled to figure out his cause of death. But, new footage emerged that might help the family find some closure.

No Heart

It must be bad enough to discover that a brother and a son passed away on vacation. But for Byron’s family, more shocks arrived. After his body returned to Australia, a second autopsy found his heart was missing. Naturally, that meant a big investigation took place. And later, the Indonesian officials claimed that they kept the organ for forensic tests.

Obviously, his family hated the idea and his mom, Chantal Haddow, called the situation “inhumane.” Additionally, it made her suspect there was foul play especially as Byron seemed to have unexplained injuries. Recently, 60 Minutes Australia took another look at the story.

New CCTV Footage

The host introduced the segment by noting, “So many Australians travel to Bali each year. It’s easy to think it’s actually a part of Australia. But this story is a tragic reminder it isn’t.” The report focused on new evidence and never-before-seen CCTV footage. The host hoped that the video would help “piece together the last moments of this young man’s life.”

The potentially true crime case raised urgent questions about international protocols. Notably, it highlighted a lack of transparency and communication with grieving families. Eventually, the missing heart was returned for DNA testing months later. But, the damage was done. Still, in honor of their son and their own terrible loss, Byron Haddow’s family started a safety campaign. After all, his story is a reminder that things can be different overseas, and dream vacations can turn into a literal nightmare.

Tragically, Byron almost changed his mind about traveling to Bali when his best friend pulled out. So, he ended up in the company of someone else. Perhaps the family felt bad things might not have happened if he’d been with his close friend. And, they had a lot of questions about the company he fell in with in Bali. At one stage, they started partying, and a CCTV camera caught a lot of it. You can watch the full video below, and come to some of your own conclusions.

The Loud Splash

In the video, there was a party going on, and everyone seemed happy. But not everything was caught on the camera. However, there was sound. At one stage, a loud splash was heard. Then, the family must have suffered terrible heartbreak listening as chaos erupted. One of the young men ran off to look for help, but returned with nobody in tow. For some reason, he decided to call a tattoo artist they’d met, instead of the emergency services.

Meanwhile, some of the girls tried to help Byron, and keep his head out of the water. But, some of them just wanted to get away from the scary scene. In any event, it was all too late to save Byron. Even after the ambulance finally arrived, nothing could be done. Naturally, the parents wonder if the girls who wanted to leave were hiding some vital information.

Here are a few more reactions:

  • Sad; strength for his family and friends.
  • Save your money don’t go there.
  • I’m Filipino and have been to Bali multiple times, the place isn’t safe anymore same goes for the Philippines’ top tourist destinations and the whole of Southeast Asia in general. PLEASE don’t visit in this tough times. Go somewhere else or just stay at home.
  • No need to go here, go somewhere else.
