After a phenomenal career that turned the previously predominantly white sport of tennis on its head, the star just lost her final match at the US Open. Clearly, she felt upset about the negative note as she cried.

As younger players come up in the ranks of professional tennis, those who continue the sport after the age of 30 often struggle. Actually, in 2019, when she lost at the US Open, Serena might have started to struggle a bit as she approached her fortieth birthday. While it might sound crazy, some royal critics claimed that her friendship with Meghan Markle seemed to bring her bad luck.

Serena Williams obviously rejected the idea that her bestie might bring bad luck to her performance on the tennis court. After all, last year she said that Prince Harry’s wife is “classy.” That came after the now infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey. Sticking by her friends is something that the tennis star seems good at. Most recently, she appeared with Meghan on her debut podcast, “Archetypes.” Now that she exited her splendid career, no doubt Meghan reached out to her.

On Friday, when the tennis star lost her match in the third round, she graciously praised her opponent, Ajla Tomljanovic. She said, “I tried. Alja played a little bit better.” Tearful, the tennis star felt a bit devastated as she officially retires from the spot that she dominated for 27 years. Serena Williams has countless tournaments behind her. Meanwhile, the Croatian-Australian professional tennis player does have age on her side. She also has a lot of talent and was ranked No. 38 in the world earlier this year. Still, it doesn’t make it any easier to know that she was ousted by a potential champion. After all, Alija didn’t go into the match as the favorite to win.

Serena Williams – Respect And Love Despite The Loss

Serena Williams fans are not holding the loss against her. After all, she cranked up a lot of admiration during her fight to become the best-known tennis player of all time. So, plenty of comments like this one arrived:

Meanwhile, the author of Race Against Time, Keith Boykin said on Twitter, “Four matches in one week. A three hour final match. A 40-year-old mom. A 29-year-old opponent. Still the GOAT.”
