History of Soap Operas
The term soap opera was actually created in the 1930s and was used to describe a radio series that highlighted the drama and dilemma of the characters. Fast forward to when TV started taking over the radio and those stories became part of our daily lives.
Many years ago, there were several soaps to watch. However, now there are only four: The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives, and General Hospital.
Soap Spoilers: Classics Beat Out New Shows
Interestingly enough, “newer” soaps that tried to match the success of Y&R, DOOL, GH, and B&B failed to keep up. In fact, Passions was the most recent soap opera to debut, but it didn’t last more than a few years.
Classic soaps from the 70s remain on the air though and still have die-hard loyal fans that can get pretty passionate!
Evolution of How Fans Watch
Soap opera spoilers indicate that times are changing, technology is advancing, and so are the ways that fans watch. You no longer have to be at home by a certain time to catch the soap. You don’t have to struggle with the VCR not taping episodes. Now, fans watch by using their DVRs, watching online, and even using streaming services like Hulu Plus.
To keep up with changing times, at least one soap opera has begun using “web-based” spin-offs. Days of Our Lives actually created an Internet series on the official DOOL app, “Chad & Abby in Paris” that was based on a fan-favorite couple, “Chabby.” There are plans to create more of those “app-isodes” and viewers wonder if this might eventually happen with other soaps, too. Only time will tell.
Soap Opera Spoilers: Surviving Through the Years
There was a time when there were several soaps that viewers could choose from. However, only four remain on the air. Each time renewals come around, fans worry about their favorite one being canceled. So far, all four have been renewed but their concern is valid. After all, nobody ever thought All My Children would ever go off the air, but it did.
This makes viewership so important. If you are a fan, then make sure to keep watching because those numbers matter when renewal time comes around.
