Max Page played Reed from 2009-2016. That solid child actor has been battling serious heart-related issues for years. However, that important life point likely isn’t linked to the recast of the character he played, as Y&R wanted to advance the age of Vickie’s (Amelia Heinle) teenage son and write him in a new direction.

A recent Newman family dinner, which is nicely developing as more of a tradition than a special event, afforded Reed the opportunity to play the piano. Viewers know that this young man’s guitar practice can be heard throughout the neighborhood where he lives with his mother. So it was pleasantly surprising to see Nikki’s (Melody Thomas Scott) genetic influence evidence itself through her grandson’s hands after the Newman’s finished their meal.

Nikki asked Reed to play for the gathered clan, after which she also briefly joined in. Those scenes were intermixed with Vickie needing to leave the get-together so she could be with Billy (Jason Thompson), who was at the hospital with Jill (Jess Walton). Vickie’s attempt to instill discipline in Reed has become a central storyline for these connected characters. Nikki’s recognition of the outlet Reed uses to deal with his world was the stressed point within this episode.

The next episode teaser, which showed Reed preparing to play his guitar at The Underground’s open mic night, continues an ongoing exploration of this character’s musical pursuits. Many actors possess multiple talents, beyond the art of acting itself. Thomas has long demonstrated her ability to gracefully touch the ivory keys. How fortunate Y&R is to have employed another actor whose real life talents can be incorporated into Genoa City.

I am really enjoying the evolving storyline with Reed. Love the Reed and Nikki scenes. I was in tears watching Reed and Nikki play the piano on Friday’s episode. Nikki is so compassionate with him. Even though Victoria is being strict with him, they have great chemistry too. Tristan Lake Leabu is very talented actor and musician. I am hoping the character and actor will stay a long time. It would be nice to see a younger generation legacy character stay. Similar to Nick, Nikki, Paul, etc. Kudos to the writers and the actors!

I am enjoying this story. Tristan is such a great addition to the Y&R cast, and I am thoroughly enjoying him. Reed is a teen, and a typical one at that. I find Victoria too strict on him, so it’s nice to see the good influence his grandmother has on him. The piano scene was beautiful, and I am looking forward to seeing him perform at open mic night. Let’s just hope his mother doesn’t ruin it for him.
