Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) performed brilliantly on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Facing her Multiple Sclerosis foe, Mrs. Newman delivered a memorable piano one-song effort that persuaded Genoa City’s elite crowd to offer a standing ovation. The power of soothing music realized again.




Chancellor Pavilion was a smart setting to host the benefit concert. Y&R’s fabled iconic backdrops have long been recognized as the best in soap. Yes, the overall visual was delicious.

Lead-in drama regarding the potential need to cancel the night’s festivities was a smart play, as that tension kept the audience guessing both on-screen and off. Nick’s (Joshua Morrow) role in the shorted sound board crisis was eventually recognized by Victor (Eric Braeden), which then bled into an alpha male confrontation in the Newman Towers parking garage.

No time calculations were made regarding Nick having used the elevator to arrive in the concrete dungeon just moments before Victor grabbed his shoulder after apparently having taken the stairs. Suspension of disbelief was invoked by this scribe in order to move forward.

Purposeful storylines that build off health issues have often served soap well. In this instance, co-executive producer and head writer Sally Sussman’s team created a worthy arc that showcased leading Newman family members to varying degrees.

While it didn’t initially appear to be a ‘Niktor’ vehicle repair story, Nikki’s success led her to see Victor’s positive intentions. This couple, that is beloved by many tenured Y&R fans, seems to have reconciled or at least has arrived at a cooling off period.


Nikki’s telling advice to her son was to not be so angry with his father. She herself had overcome disgust that was provoked by Victor’s recently revealed link to Adam’s (Justin Hartley) death via the Chloe (Elizabeth Hendrickson) connection.

The music Nikki played through obvious pain created a soothing sound that healed ‘Niktor’s’ combined heart once again. As with all forms of escapist entertainment, light-hearted viewers want they characters they care about to win.
