Many years have passed since Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) appeared on stage on ‘The Young and the Restless’. But her Bayou days haven’t been revived in 2017. Instead, Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) requested her accompaniment while she was performing at The Underground this week.

Nikki took Tessa under her wing since first finding the fledgling performer standing outside Crimson Lights. This new character was strumming her guitar and serenading, which Nikki found both adorable and intriguing. Katherine’s (Jeanne Cooper) former protege quickly turned Fairbank’s character into Reed’s (Tristan Lake Leabu) music instructor and her own personal assistant.
Tessa clearly has the potential to become a key personality in Genoa City. She’s already linked to Mrs. Newman, surely will stay connected to Y&R’s resident teen heartthrob and appears to be Noah’s (Robert Adamson) likely next love interest. However, as with all things soap, viewers are wondering what will fill this young lady’s backstory.
Sally Sussman and her writing staff are evoking sights seen long ago through the Open Mic Night performances that are taking place at Nick’s (Joshua Morrow) nightclub. Danny Romalotti’s (Michael Damian) music career was a main spotlight in decades past, which allowed Damian’s real life pursuits to be furthered as well.
Fairbanks and Leabu are both talented musicians. Their hires enabled a refreshed take on the modern music scene and offers something for various segments within the audience. While millions of school-age students no longer consume soaps during summer break, there are still traditionalists within this demographic segment. That contingent is joined by a larger and older audience group that is comparing Tessa and Noah to their own children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

Nikki’s newest confidant should continue to allow her to engage in light-hearted adventures this spring and summer. Together they make a likeable duo. Hopefully Tessa doesn’t have a hidden agenda, as that would darken what appears to be a fresh arc for this legacy character and all who are connected to her.
