'The Young and the Restless': GC Buzz Alert! - Hilary's Heart Appeared Again

Yes, Hilary (Mishael Morgan) has a heart on ‘The Young and the Restless’. In a terrific head fake, viewers saw GC Buzz’ lead reporter scrounge for gossip at Thanksgiving dinner benefit offered for Genoa City’s down-and-out population. Then, by episode’s end, the audience was reminded of her humanity.

Mariah (Camryn Grimes) interviewed a homeless woman who offered a heartfelt description how addiction caused her to lose everything. Meanwhile, Hilary was hoping to promote, or provoke, a ‘Philly’ reunion by taunting Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) who was working as a volunteer server while Billy (Jason Thompson) worked behind the bar. ‘Red’ cast off Hilary’s banter, which included a reminder that Phyllis once (accurately) tagged her as having a crush on Jack (Peter Bergman).

Later, at the website’s studios, Hilary offered a backhanded compliment to Mariah for having done a good job in obtaining footage the viewers hadn’t seen. Toward the end of the episode Hilary gave her cameraman a sealed envelope and told him that, “No one can know about this.”. He was later shown at Crimson Lights handing the envelope to J.J. (no actor noted). She opened it, took out a handful of crisp Ben Franklin’s and a handwritten note.

The message Hilary wrote advised the woman to find her children and restore her life. Devoted viewers got the implied historical reference to Hilary’s own mother. And all audience members assumed J.J. would do just that, while also reconsidering Morgan’s character. Yes, one action doesn’t change everything, or mean that she’ll be less aggressive. But Hilary was written in deeper context within a memorable sequence that provided potential for the future.

Morgan has the chops to be more than a one-dimensional villain. Hopefully, incoming head writer Sally Sussman will develop her character into a full-blown force starting in December. Outgoing head writer Chuck Pratt, Junior’s use of Morgan varied. But he proved in this episode that she can deliver when called upon as she’s done in the past.
