'General Hospital' News: Maurice Benard To Appear on Dr. Oz Show – Discusses Struggle With Bipolar Disorder“General Hospital” mob boss Sonny Corinthos doesn’t struggle with bipolar disorder alone. His portrayer Maurice Benard has been managing the disorder most of his adult life. The actor will appear on the “Dr. Oz” show to share his story.

'General Hospital' News: Maurice Bernard To Appear on Dr. Oz Show – Discusses Struggle With Bipolar DisorderMaurice posted a photo on Facebook – he’s in the studio where Dr. Mehmet Oz’s show is taped and the actor is joined by his wife and two daughters. The snapshot is captioned, “Getting ready for the great Dr. Mehmet Oz Going to discuss something very important to me today #droz #bipolar #mentalhealthawareness #erasingthestigma — at Doctor Oz Studio.”

As “GH” fans know, Maurice is an advocate for mental health awareness of all sorts, not just bipolar disorder. The actor has had the strength to allow the “General Hospital” writers to incorporate his very personal battle into Sonny Corinthos storyline.

Bernard has also been generous enough to permit the TPTB to write a storyline for Morgan Corinthos [Bryan Craig] to show that bipolar disorder can, and often does, run in families. It isn’t just something that you “catch” and it’s just as important to know your family’s mental health family history as it is to know their physical health history.

The “Dr. Oz” episode that Maurice Benard taped is scheduled to air on Thursday, February 25. Check your local listings for the channel and time. When looking at the dozens of comments on Maurice’s Facebook page “GH” fans are eager to join in the discussion and will be tuned in to hear what Benard has to say and to share.

Thank you Maurice Benard for having the courage to continually come forward and honestly share your experience living with bipolar disorder – and encouraging others to do so also. We look forward to watching you on Dr. Oz and hearing what you have to say.
