Many daytime drama alums have gone on to be the most elite actors in show business. You probably know the movies they’ve made and awards they received – this week let’s catch up with some of the most powerful and successful actresses who got their start on soap operas: Demi Moore, Robin Wright, and Meg Ryan.
Demi Moore
Demi Moore got her big break when she joined the cast of “General Hospital” as investigative reporter Jackie Templeton in 1981. After leaving “GH” in 1984 Demi co-starred in the movie “Blame It on Rio” which is considered her breakthrough role. The role that truly began Demi’s road to becoming one of the biggest names in Hollywood was in “St. Elmo’s Fire” as Jules Van Patten in 1985 – but the movie “About Last Night” was the turning point in Moore’s career. She began receiving higher quality scripts and in 1990 she truly made her mark on show biz history as Molly Jensen in the movie “Ghost.” Demi Moore has starred opposite some of the biggest names in Hollywood including Robert Redford, Jack Nicholson, Michael Douglas, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg.
In 2009 Moore helped launch Helen Rubinstein’s perfume line Wanted – described as an extremely floral-woody fragrance. But what’s she doing in 2015? Demi Moore is co-starring in the movie “Forsaken” with Donald Sutherland and Kiefer Sutherland. Also you can see her starring opposite Jessica Lange in the movie “Wild. Oats.”

Meg Ryan
“As the World Turns” was the soap opera that was the springboard for Meg Ryan’s highly successful career in movies. Meg portrayed Betsy Stewart from 1982 until 1984 and with Frank Runyeon as Steve Andropoulos by her side they became one of the most famous super couples in daytime drama in the 1980s. But the blockbuster hit movie “When Harry Met Sally” put Meg on the road to super-stardom – she was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – and “American’s Sweetheart” was born. Ryan went on to star in “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail” with Academy Award winner Tom Hanks. These days you’ll find Meg Ryan in the movie “Fan Girl” where she portrays Mary Farrow. In 2015 Meg completed directing the movie “Ithaca” which is slated for release in 2016. “Ithaca” teams Ryan up once again with Tom Hanks – and her son Jack Quaid also has a role in the movie.

Robin Wright
Robin Wright was the actress who created the role of Kelly Capwell on “Santa Barbara” and the daytime drama could never seem to find the right recast after Wright left the soap opera – the role was recast four times in nine years. The first big screen hit for Robin was “The Princess Bride” and almost every movie she has starred in has gone on to be box office gold and/or received critical acclaim. She has starred alongside some of the most legendary actors in the business – Tom Hanks, Kevin Costner, Bruce Willis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Renee Zellweger. In 2014 Robin completed filming “Most Wanted Man” – actor Philip Seymour Hoffman’s last film before he died of a drug overdose. For the past four years Robin Wright has portrayed Claire Underwood on the massively successful Netflix Original “House of Cards” opposite Kevin Spacey. The fourth season of the drama is rumored to be released on March 4, 2016.
