It’s become trendy among a certain segment of society to bash all things via social media. But feeling coerced to follow a negative crowd dates back far beyond afternoon daytime dramas. CBS’ decision was a win for light-hearted souls who don’t claim that every part of life must be serious, or political. Meanwhile, entertainment snobs are likely enraged, incredulous or fighting some other phantom battle elsewhere.

Consider Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) and Eric Braeden (Victor) for a moment. Both actors have been part of Y&R’s cast since the early 1980’s. Braeden was hired first (1980), followed by Thomas Scott (1981).

Have these talented actors gotten older and worked through some repetitive storylines? Well, everyone gets older and storyline patterns represent one issue that soap fans understand. Thomas Scott and Braeden have aged well and consistently deliver on-screen, which is obviously the subjective take of this scribe.

Now, think about Sharon (Sharon Case) and Nick (Joshua Morrow). They’ve had their ups and downs since first being introduced in the mid-1990’s.

Case’s character has been attacked for being too crazy, which misinterprets her bipolar condition. Case herself has been demeaned for her looks. All honest assessments would rate this lady as nothing less than pretty.

As for Morrow, his character has made mistakes (including his pursuit of Phyllis, then played by Michelle Stafford), but he’s also learned from life and is a good dad. Anyone who is the son of Victor Newman also pales in the shadow of the ‘Moustache’. Ask Adam (most recently played by Justin Hartley) about that in the future because he’s not dead and he’ll surely offer his take.

This scribe could write on about the other solid actors who portray all of the textured characters among the Abbott, Winters, Baldwin and Ashby families, among others. But the point has already been made.

Y&R easily ranks with the great broadcast network soap operas of all-time. All intelligent people who appreciate quality entertainment agree, which is why the reigning ratings’ leader remains available on TV just as it has been since 1973.
