Teen, 16, Charged as Adult in Killings of Maryland Sister, 15, and Brother, 9

Sixteen-year-old Keith Maurice James Jr. sits in the Baltimore County Detention Center tonight. A judge locked him up without bail, and he won’t be entering the juvenile justice system anytime soon.

Two Lives Lost in Gwynn Oak

According to charging documents cited by Fox Baltimore, officers arrested James on July 22, 2026, in West Baltimore. Authorities charged him as an adult with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of using a firearm in a violent crime.

The charges stem from a July 7 shooting in Gwynn Oak, Maryland. That afternoon, 15-year-old Giovanna “Gigi” Myrie and her 9-year-old brother, Steve Allen, died inside their home.

The Adult Court System

The court system doesn’t treat Keith Maurice James Jr. like a child because Maryland law leaves no room for it. Under state legal rules outlined by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, teenagers aged 16 or 17 charged with first-degree murder are automatically in adult court.

Defence attorney Brian Thompson asked a judge to move the teenager to a secure juvenile facility. The judge said no, pointing to safety risks for other youth.

Maryland law does not allow a reverse waiver for a 16-year-old charged with first-degree murder. When the crime hits the highest level, the juvenile system closes its doors.

Threat on FaceTime

Detectives built their case using digital tracks and neighborhood eyes. ABC News reported that James knew the siblings and had talked to Gigi for roughly two months.

On July 4, James visited her house. A witness later told investigators they saw James on a FaceTime call holding a handgun. The same witness claimed James threatened to kill Gigi if she “messed around with any other guys.”

Three days later, Gigi and her little brother were dead.

Cameras Capture Bus Rides

Phone records put the teenager’s mobile device near the Talles Road crime scene at 4:22 PM on July 7. He had placed a call to Gigi just three minutes earlier.

Bus cameras caught his arrival. Maryland Transit Administration footage shows James stepping off a bus half a mile away at 4:14 PM, wearing a black t-shirt and light blue headphones. Investigators say neighborhood surveillance cameras later captured him walking toward the house.

Then came the outfit change. Around 5:08 PM, cameras captured James running across Flannery Lane. He wore a heavy black jacket with the hood pulled up and a face mask covering his features. By 5:45 PM, he boarded a bus back into Baltimore City.

Detectives believe James changed clothes after the shooting, but somebody apparently forgot that street cameras run all day.

Mourning Two Children

Police Chief Robert McCullough called the case “troubling” during a public safety meeting in Randallstown. He urged parents to monitor their children’s relationships and watch for signs of dating violence.

While detectives gathered ballistics and video clips, a local community gathered to say goodbye. Hundreds of mourners filled St. Casimir Church in Canton on July 21. People wore black and yellow because the family asked them to honor the kids’ favorite colors.

Silence and Next Steps

The Myrie and Allen families released a statement before the funeral through school officials. They wrote that Steve and Gigi were “deeply loved by so many,” adding that their “love, laughter, and beautiful spirits will forever remain in our hearts.”

They thanked people for their support, noting that local kindness brought them “comfort beyond words.”

Since the arrest on July 22, the family hasn’t spoken publicly. They asked for space and privacy while the legal process moves forward.

During his initial court appearance on July 23, Keith Maurice James Jr. didn’t speak. His lawyer offered condolences to the victims’ family, waived the bond hearing, and reminded reporters that his client remains innocent until proven guilty in court.
