Darien Turner allegedly turned a quiet, multi-million dollar Fort Lauderdale mansion in the Nurmi Isles neighborhood into a horrific crime scene on Saturday, July 6, 2024. By the time the sun was high, 44-year-old Christian Colon lay dead on the living room floor. He had been shot multiple times.
Frantic 911 Calls
The story of what happened inside the house came together through a series of frantic 911 calls. The first call came from the 23-year-old suspect himself.
He sounded confused. He told the dispatcher there was a man shot on the ground, but when asked who did it, he claimed he had “no idea.” He kept repeating that he needed medical help because his shoulder was out of joint.
A Cry for Help
Then, another family member called the police. She was screaming. She begged for an ambulance, telling the dispatcher the victim “was shot by somebody in the house.” She did not name the gunman on the phone, but she said they were both still inside.

When the police arrived, they did not have to search long. They found the suspect outside. On the Law&Crime Network video this week, bodycam footage shows an officer yelling, “He’s the shooter. Come here.” Darien Turner surrendered immediately. He had a gun right in his front pocket.
Arrest on the Lawn
The arrest was messy. He kept crying out because his shoulder was dislocated. “My shoulder’s out of place,” he told the officers. It is still not entirely clear how he hurt his arm.
The police laid him on the grass and pulled the gun from his pants. Inside, they found Colon. Paramedics pronounced him dead at 11:00 a.m.
The motive remains a blank space, but family history offers some clues. According to the police report featured on the podcast, the suspect’s mother told officers her son started having mental health issues in 2019.
She said he had schizophrenia. He had never been violent before, but he apparently believed his stepfather wanted to kill him.
Pushed Past His Mother
The mother and her ex-husband had recently divorced. They were trying to make things work again, so Colon had moved back into the mansion.
The suspect had been hovering around the house for days. He showed up on July 5, which his mother thought was strange. He came back early on the morning of July 6, but she did not let him in.
He came back again around 10:43 a.m. This time, she gave him a hug outside. He suddenly pushed past her and ran inside.
The Fatal Confrontation
Prosecutors allege that Truner went upstairs looking for Christian Colon. Colon was actually downstairs on the couch. The suspect came back down, pulled a gun from his waistband, and opened fire.
He did not stop. After shooting his stepfather, he walked away. He noticed Colon was still moving and making noise on the floor.
Allegedly, he turned around and shot him again. Police investigators later found 21 shell casings scattered around the room.
Inside the Interrogation Room
After his arrest, the young man sat in a police interrogation room. He did not know he was being recorded. He spent over an hour talking to himself about going to college and starting a tech business. He wanted to make a music app for the Xbox.
When the detective finally came in, he was polite. He talked about growing up in Florida. He explained that he missed his high school graduation because he skipped a final exam. But the moment the detective read him his Miranda rights and asked if he wanted to talk without a lawyer, he changed his mind.
“No,” he said. “You want an attorney?” the detective asked. “Yes,” he replied.
According to My Crime Library, Darien Turner faces a charge of “premeditated murder” and is currently being held without bond at the Broward County Main Jail per WSVN.
He appeared in court the day after the shooting and reportedly, the court also mandated a mental health screening. But currently, there is no set trial date.
