‘Permanent Uncertainty’
As it’s been touted in advertisements leading up to Survivor’s premiere, Season 51, Episode 1 launched the beginning of an ‘Open Era’, which is what Jeff Probst described as ‘permanent uncertainty’.
Simply put, every idol, every twist, every advantage in Survivor’s history can come into the game without warning and in any order! The Open Era, by design, breaks any assumptions players may have about what’s coming.
Two-Tribe Competition
Interestingly enough, instead of three tribes, which have been done in recent years, contestants were split up into two: Toka (yellow) and Savu (purple).
In addition, Exile Island returned. Before the tribes were split, Lewis was the only one who volunteered to separate himself from the rest of his castaways (before he knew where he was going). Jeff Probst arrived at Exile 30 hours later with a challenge.
Lewis was given a shot to win an immunity idol and needed to chop through a mast before an hourglass ran out.
Unfortunately, the physicality of the challenge took a toll on Lewis, and he was unable to win the idol. With that said, Ron from Savu found an immunity idol during the premiere, so there’s that.
New Twist With The Coin Flip
The coin flip advantage is back, but with a twist. A contestant can decide to participate in the flip.
As per the usual, if the person calls the correct flip, the prize pot will double to $2 million, and the castaway receives safety at Tribal Council and an immunity idol.
With that said, if they call the flip incorrectly, they get eliminated; however, the extra million does not disappear … it rolls over to the next season, which can increase the prize pot that much more.
Who Was Voted Out In Episode One?
Toku lost the first immunity challenge and was sent to Tribal Council. At first, people were gunning for Jenna, as she had been a bit guarded during group discussions.
Devin questioned whether she was really a wedding photographer, which she was. Jenna was a big guarded, but not because of game play; she was struggling with her recent divorce.
With that said, Aaliyah’s name was also thrown around, mainly because she had mentioned Brady being too aggressive and intense during the loss of the group’s first immunity challenge.
As both women’s names were talked about before the vote, they both used their Shots in the Dark; however, both got the ‘Not Safe’ verdict. In the end, Aaliyah was eliminated by a vote of 6-2.
Major Injury Coming
Survivor spoilers for Episode 2 reveal that Lewis will be placed on the Toku tribe, which will hopefully shake up the team’s dynamics a bit after Tribal Council.
Still, it looks like Brady will suffer a major injury while chopping wood in the fire. The Survivor 51 preview shows the man holding his hand, with a ton of blood around it, so will Brady be sent home due to this injury, or can he recover?
