Reality TV fans, it’s time to get excited because Peacock greenlit a new reality competition series called Assassins. If you thought The Traitors was cool, this sounds even better. Read on for more details.
A Live-Action Show
According to Variety, the new show is a live-action stealth game, and Scarlett Johansson will executive produce it. It’s exciting for the Black Widow star as well, because it’s a new career move into producing reality TV shows.
Per Deadline, “The series comes from Sony’s B17 Entertainment and founders Brien Meagher and Rhett Bachner are exec producing alongside Johansson”
How Will It Work?
Plenty of folks stateside are familiar with Assassins as played by kids at school and on college campuses. In the game, people usually use Nerf blasters, water pistols, or clothespins to secretly eliminate classmates over a school term.
Well, in the new show, Peacock plans to give every contestant an assigned target that they must keep secret. They have until the season ends to eliminate that person. But at the same time, each player is also a target, so it’s survival strategy as well as a wild hunt.
Much like The Traitors and Survivor, competitors will lean into alliances, strategic planning, and tons of deception.
A Winning Strategy?
Variety noted that the network’s strategy aligns with its recent programming successes. Basing shows on real-life games seems to be a winner for Peacock because The Traitors draws on the party game Mafia.
The premise could appeal to fans of strategy games.
Right now, many details aren’t known because it’s such a new idea. So there hasn’t been any host announced. There’s also no cast list yet, and the release date remains unknown.
Deadline reminded readers about two projects that were previously explored in reality TV.
They mentioned, “CBS aired Hunted, based on Channel 4’s British series, for one season in 2017, while The Runner, which came from Pilgrim Media Group and Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, launched on go90 in 2016.”
Unknown Factors
Will there be ordinary folks in it? Or will they be celebs? Recognizable reality stars are a possibility, but nothing has been confirmed. Alternatively, random celebs might try their hand at success in Assassins.
Andy Dehnart raised some interesting questions on Reality Blurred. He wrote, “if everyone’s an assassin, how do they hang out in the same space without a bunch of people bumping each other off? What kind of weapons do they use? Tossed apples?”
That’s an interesting question, but for now, Peacock fans will just have to wait and see.
