Off with her head! How a politician leaned a lesson about Queen Elizabeth II and power in the old palace.

When it comes to one particular royal family commentator, he’s very pro-monarchy, and he loves to share his opinions. However, he’s also got a treasure trove of historical memories. Many of them, in fact, seem very interesting, and this week, he dropped a new one.

A New Historical Story

During his Daily News Headlines vlog on Monday, Neil Sean shared a story from his archives. In fact, the topic about it involved the late Queen Elizabeth, and focused on her “steel.”

Back in the day, Sean related, a socialist politician, Tony Benn, learned a lesson in power. For some reason, the memory stuck in his mind, and now that he elaborated, it makes for interesting reading.

The Heyday Of Reporting

In his vlog, Sean took folks back in time when news stuck around rather than being a flash in the internet pan. Actually, it was at the height of his own “heyday” when he worked with Sky and Fox.

On occasion, reporters ran into influential folks, and apart from the royal family, he recollected people like the Home Secretary sitting “next to Roger Daltrey.”

Additionally, the royal commentator opined that politics wasn’t the “utter shambles” it is today. So, it all seemed rather serious and came with those who wanted to influence the future. One of them was Tony Benn.

Benn Was A Wealthy Radical

Certainly, it seemed that much like current trends, there was a push by some folks to bring down The Firm. Well, one of them was Tony Benn, and Sean opined that he seemed rather “bumptious” and “a bit tricky.”

Despite being born in a mansion opposite Parliament and enjoying wealthy “independence,” Benn’s mission was to “abolish the monarchy.”

The Headless Stamp Plot

Of course, these days, the type of stamps you buy at post offices and stick on postcards seem very outdated. But for hundreds of years, that’s how people communicated. Apparently, back in 1965, while serving as the “Postmaster General,” Benn hatched a plan.

He decided that removing the head of Queen Elizabeth from stamps seemed like a fine idea. Oh, how collectors would have clamoured for the first issue if it happened. Anyway, Sean related how Benn took along his portfolio of “headless” designs. Talk about off with her head!

The Interaction At The Palace

Allegedly, when he arrived at Buckingham Palace, the politician spread out his headless designs. But he laid them “out on the floor.” According to the royal family commentator, he asked the Queen to “come down and have a look.”

Well, not about to get down for anyone, she replied, “No, I’ll stand.”

Allegedly, Benn didn’t want to take no for an answer, and apparently, he “kept pushing it hard.” Finally, the word came back, and it was a “flat no.”

A Lesson In Who Really Rules

Later, Benn allegedly admitted to Sean that it was the moment he realized the royals were “powerful.” In comparison, he felt that politicians were “just peripheral.”

Back in the day, it seems that if the monarch wanted, “she could” just about stop anything she disagreed with.

Does The Crown Still Have Teeth?

Typically, Sean used his story to highlight current events. So, he raised the questions about King Charles and former Prince Andrew. Certainly, it doesn’t seem as if he exercises the same amount of influence and power that his mom had.

Is it because he’s a weak monarch? Or did modern politics finally breach the Palace gates?

Viewers React

In the comments section on YouTube, a lot of people seemed interested in the history lesson. One viewer commented:

Neil I remember both those men very well. With Tony Benn my dad would say “he’s got a hugely overinflated opinion of his value in Parliament.” He desperately wanted to lead the Labour Party but was pipped to the post.

Here are a few more responses from the discussion:

  • I love and learn so much from your fascinating stories and magical memories that you share with such eloquence and enthusiasm, you are amazing. I believe in our Monachy and our wonderful late Queen definitely had the respect and power.
  • Queen Elizabeth definitely had the respect and the power. I’m not sure that King Charles does but I believe that Prince William will.
  • The late Queen had a presence, while Charles let the people closer and became powerless.
