Robert Froberg: Federal Charges Filed In Decades-Old Kentucky Crime

For three decades, a true crime hung over Bowling Green, Kentucky. Well, a man named Robert Froberg recently got charged with the crime of allegedly kidnapping and murdering a child. Read on for more details.

The Crime

Morgan Jade Violi, 7, disappeared in July of 1996. For years, her family frantically hoped and prayed that their daughter would return. However, that never happened. It seemed inexplicable because they lived in a quiet neighborhood. Well, it went cold, and hope for justice faded.

However, per a report by NewsChannel 5 on YouTube, 61-year-old Robert Froberg faces federal charges. It took many years while investigators hunted for things to link suspicions to the crime. However, they finally “pieced together what happened.”

Still, the case lacked the final details needed as proof to warrant an arrest. However, the wait for an answer ended when Froberg, currently an inmate, “admitted to his prior crimes.” Actually, he had a history of evading justice.

An Escape Artist

Recent affidavits in court seem almost unbelievable. Back in 1988, Froberg ended up sentenced to 40 years for robbery. However, he escaped from prison multiple times in the late ’90s. In April of 1996, he fled from a detention facility.

Later, in Pennsylvania, he came to the attention of the cops again. That time, he tried to “lure a child into a treehouse.” However, he didn’t stay behind bars for long and escaped again. Sadly, that happened just eight days before Morgan Jade Violi vanished.

On July 24, 1996, Morgan was “outside playing with a friend.” Well, Froberg allegedly grabbed her and drove away in a stolen van. Tragically, her remains were discovered in October of that year in Tennessee.

Science Helps Justice

So, why is the murder charge happening now? Well, the answer lies in the “progress in DNA forensic testing” and new database technologies. Back in 1997, an FBI lab found a fiber of Morgan’s hair that matched a seat cushion in the stolen van Froberg used.

However, modern DNA advancements linked the hair in his van directly to Froberg. When the FBI questioned him in 2026, the weight of evidence led to a confession. Callously, he admitted he “strangled Morgan to death.”

Viewers React

Naturally, the reappearance of a true crime from so long ago found loads of reactions. In the YouTube comments, one person wrote, “30 years is a lifetime, but justice doesn’t have an expiration date.”

Meanwhile, many felt critical of the prison system, questioning how a man who escaped multiple times was ever in a position to be near a playground. Here are a few of those responses from the discussion:

  • The system failed Morgan in 1996, but at least science didn’t fail her today.
  • I would be so mad again hearing she could be alive if they hadn’t been so lax with prison security. He escaped twice. TWICE.
  • “who is being held accountable for allowing this monster to escape prison???? Someone wasn’t doing their job!

Searching For Closure

For the Violi family, the news comes as a mix of “relief” and “heartbreak.” After all, they spent thirty years “not knowing where she’s at,” or having any “clarity or closure.”

While the arrest can’t bring Morgan Jade Violi back, prosecutors hope the charges against Robert Froberg brings a “measure of closure” to the community.

What’s Next?

While the confession and charges seem like a “significant development,” the legal process just begins for Robert Froberg. However, as he confessed, it might not be a long-drawn-out trial. Time will tell, but those folks who feel sad about Morgan Jade Violi hope the judge throws the book at him.
