Recently, news reports discussed that Prince Harry might invite his dad, King Charles, to attend and possibly open the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. While some folks see this as a positive step that might repair their broken relationship, not everyone feels that way. Read on for more details.
Harry’s ‘Dream’ For The Games
The Scottish Daily Express reported that “Harry wants it to happen both for the games, and for their relationship. It’s his dream to have his father by his side.” However, a royal commentator Neil Sean took a different take on it during his Daily News Headlines vlog on Sunday.
Sean seems to feel that the move by Prince Harry was less about family healing and more about practical issues. In his chat about it, Sean talked about the fact that the Birmingham games might face a few challenges. For instance, he mentioned that the city council recently went bankrupt. “They haven’t had their rubbish removed for months,” he noted.

So, the royal expert feels that the Invictus Games needs “a huge injection of cash” from big sponsors. Obviously, he argued, if King Charles attends it would add some important “glitz” for potential financial backers.
No Sudden Diary Openings?
“You see his Majesty the King, the diary would be set in stone about 18 months [ahead],” Sean noted. Naturally, that suggests that talking about a sudden invitation seems a bit suspicious. And, he also opined that the royal family might take some heat from the public if they decline an invitation.
Suggesting that the royals were maybe not all on the ball, he also felt that they should have booked another event. After all, it would have given a great “excuse” not to attend.
Not About King Charles?
As far as Sean’s concerned, Prince Harry didn’t have the interest of his dad at heart by dragging “this once noble venture” into a public tug-of-war. He also believes that the Invictus Games should be about the veterans rather than about Prince Harry, the King, and the convenience of public reconciliation.
Basically, his argument about it suggests the invitation’s not a peace offering, but rather a calculated move. Time will tell if King Charles, or any royals, take the bait and turn up to honor the good work the charity does. However, if the commentator’s right, it could be a difficult one to wriggle out of. In fact, in his opinion it might even cause more tension.

In the comments section, many people felt that Sean might have a good point. One of them opined, “Invictus needs to get back on track in honouring veterans. If it doesn’t stop being the Harry and Meghan show, the charity and the games are going to fail from lack of support.”
Here are a few more reactions from the discussion:
- The king opening the invictus games is ridiculous, so are they going to bankrupt the city just so they can make it look presentable, and yet again the ppl will be left to suffer the rest of the year, ridiculous the bloke needs to be told no!
- The Royal Family don’t need to come up with an excuse for not attending Invictus, we all understand why.
- The Invictus games is a private charity function not a national occasion, there is no precedent for the monarch to be involved in any way.
