Prince Harry Gets Honest About Fatherhood Struggles and Joys

Prince Harry Gets Honest About Fatherhood Struggles and JoysSince his exit from the Royal Family in 2020, Prince Harry has been pretty open about his mental health struggles, especially when it pertains to adjusting to life as a parent.

In his 2021 AppleTV+ Podcast, ‘The Me You Can’t See,’ which he co-produced with Oprah Winfrey, he revealed that the reason he stepped back from the thousand-year-old British institution he was born in was to prevent the passing on of generational trauma to his offsprings.

He said that the way he was raised allowed him to bottle up a lot of trauma to the extent he was experiencing arrested development.

Prince Harry Reveals the Source of His “Disconnection” From Then-unborn Son Archie

For many of us, entering parenthood needs a lot of planning. Whether it’s financially, emotionally, or even mentally, we can all agree that the gift of welcoming a little one is not one that should be considered lightly.

For Prince Harry, entering fatherhood was a novel experience that made him feel like he needed to take a crucial step to become a better version of himself. That crucial step led him to the doors of therapy, where he proceeded to unravel all the childhood trauma that he’d been carrying for years.

“Certainly I felt a disconnection because my wife was the one creating life, and I was there to witness it,” he said, during the conversation with Movember’s global director of men’s health research, Dr. Zac Seidler.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would then welcome son Prince Archie in London in May 2019. In June 2021, the former working royals welcomed daughter Princess Lilibet in California.

“Certainly, from a therapy standpoint, you want to be the best version of yourself for your kids. And I knew that I had stuff from the past that I needed to deal with and therefore, prepare myself to basically cleanse myself of the past,” he said.

“I think the biggest tip that I was given from my therapist in the U.K. was just be aware of how you feel once the baby is born,” he said.

However, it wasn’t all smooth-sailing from there, because even after the children’s arrival, Harry found that there was still a lot to do before he can be able to raise his children in a more superior way than his own father raised him.
