The true crime investigation into the death of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele took a twist when Nick Reiner’s attorney, Alan Jackson dropped the case. Speculation arrived about why. Well, a former FBI agent who attended court that day opened up about what happened and why she thinks a public defender now represents Nick. Read on for more details.
The Bombshell Announcement
Brian Entin reported on the development on his Brian Entin Investigates channel on January 8. During his discussion, he sat down with retired FBI agent Maureen O’Connell. She’d been inside the court when Alan Jackson announced he was dropping Nick Reiner as his client.

At the time, it seemed a bit shocking, and O’Connell noted that after about eight minutes, Jackson came out of the chambers. Previously, he’d been talking about subpoenas. But then he dropped the bombshell. Later, he also claimed in a press conference that he believed Nick was innocent.
Questions About The Family Trust
Naturally, as people already think that the family trust was paying for expensive representation, the other kids might have changed their minds about supporting their brother.
Allegedly, Nick killed his mom and dad in their home after a party. Well, according to O’Connell, what might have happened is that the family found out some bad things regarding the fate of their parents. Perhaps that made them stop the trust from helping their brother.
A Change Of Heart?
Importantly, it’s all speculation, as Alan Jackson can’t legally say why he dumped his client. Still, O’Connell told Brian Entin that in her opinion, “the family had a ‘change of heart,” possibly after seeing hard evidence. Notably, she didn’t see anyone in the family there to support Nick Reiner.
As for the true crime suspect, he didn’t display a lot of emotion. She described him as “having a blank stare” and a “bored countenance.” Oh, and a bad haircut. Then, at one point, he “just gave a maniacal smile” toward someone in the gallery.
The Public Defender
The public defender was already in the court before the bombshell announcement that Nick no longer had a high-profile attorney. Well, she handles Reiner’s defense now, which is why the case was deferred until February 23.
Next, the former FBI agent theorized that the family possibly didn’t have a problem with the way Jackson handled the case. After all, they could have dropped him and hired another attorney.
The switch to a public defender, she argued, indicated that the family possibly cut off all support, both financial and emotional. Previously, some people speculated that Rob Reiner and his wife Michele had a soft spot for Nick, and they might have hoped the siblings would support him if he got into trouble.
If O’Connell’s theory is correct, then perhaps the reality of the murders killed any sort of empathy they might have had for their brother’s troubled life.
Reactions From Viewers
In the comments section, one viewer opined, “Those siblings are NOT paying and I don’t blame them !!! They’ve had to put up with Nick’s TOXIC BEHAVIOUR their ENTIRE LIFE and they’re DONE, EXHAUSTED, HAD ENOUGH !!! NOW THEY DON’T have to do as their parents say!”
Here are a few more responses from the discussion:
- Maureen is right. The shock has worn off and the anger is setting in.
- Helping him is how he got where he is. Sounds like family is doing what should have been done before this horrific murder happened.
- I think Maureen is right on! Funds were cut off.
- I’m betting the family saw the autopsy report and the brutality of what he did hit them.
